What do you miss most? Least? What's different?

Do you miss the four seasons? Do you miss three of them?

Do you NOT miss the snow and cold?

How about the Friday night fish fries?

Please share with us what you miss the most, the least and what's most different from where you are now.

Regards,
Keith

Wow, Great Topic!! My wife and I discuss this topic almost every week.

I do miss having 4 seasons, but only when I see Wisconsin is having good weather. We do miss the snow, but we can drive to Flagstaff, AZ in an hour or so. The funny thing that you don't think of is the color green. We have trees and some have lawns, but you just don't get that rich green color everywhere like at Home.

We miss being able to talk to everyone, including strangers and refer to the Packers as "WE". You can't just talk to a random person in the grocery store and say, "How do you think we are going to do this weekend?"

As far as Fish Fry's, I used to get really annoyed about not having great options. But it just took 3 years to find all the great spots in Phoenix. Still nothing like being able to head to your favorite lake and hit up the great Wisconsin Fish fry's and the feeling of everyone knowing your name.

One thing I love about moving away, is that we get to discuss our Hometown almost everyday. It's extremely funny and sometimes frustrating to have to Defend the Homeland on a regular basis. I really didn't understand other persons perspective of Wisconsin until we got away for sometime.

Also, how many times has someone told you that YOU have a Wisconsin Accent? Now, I can actually pick out a Wisconsin Accent. And the differences between the U.P., Canada and Wisco. Trust me, you do have an accent. Some worse than others. Don't take it as a bad thing!

That's all for now, what else are others missing or loving?

pk will become famous soon enough
So what is Flagstaff/AZ famous for? We have great fish frys, cheese, Packers, lots of snow, etc..what does people think of when they say AZ (besides HOT)? Any certain foods, traditions, etc?

just wondering....

Flagstaff?? Not too sure. There is really good Skiing/Snowboarding/etc. The city itself reminds me a lot of Madison. There are a bunch of thrift shops, and college kids all over the place. In the summer the weather is awesome! Hiking trails, an Active Volcano, camping, etc. etc.

The weather in the summer is much like Milwaukee's, besides the humidity factor. Great for weekend get-aways for the Phoenix people.

They have SnowBowl which is a pretty nice ski resort. Bigger than all of the places in Wisco.

A lot of the traditions are old western type stuff. The Suns and Diamondbacks are pretty big here, but nothing like the Packers. There are some fish frys here, and I'm starting to see more and more. But as far as other foods, there are tons of sushi places. And there are 1000 more restaurant types here than in Wisco. The Cardinals games are getting better, not the team, but the games. The new stadium is pretty cool. The field actually retracts, and the roof. The field is only inside on game days and then rolled out the rest of the year. Before they had this stadium, the tailgating really sucked. The only good one was when the Pack was here a few years ago.

Re: What do you miss most? Least? What's different?

Great topic!
I moved from WI. way back in 1985 (?) I think, to Nashville, TN., then to the Panhandle of Florida in 1995. So I have been gone quite a while! I am a HUGE Cheesehead Packer Fan and carried that with me all along....much to the chagrin of co-workers over the years......who were either big college football fans or Saints/Dolphin Fans down here anyway. I took a lot of ribbing over the years from people who hated the Packers! Of course, those feelings have reversed for most due to going to the Super Bowl twice in the previous 11 years!

It's amazing how many "Cheeseheads" have relocated to my neck of the woods in NW FL!

Things I truly miss: Friday Night Fish Frys!! OMG! Whenever I get a chance to get up north, the 1st thing I do is go to a Fish Fry and get a triple order of perch! And I still get a kick out of how the restaurants (supper clubs) are.....put your name in at the door, go to the bar, "wait" for your table, and even some places will take your order at the bar, then seat you WHEN your food is ready! Strange to me now, I think I still prefer "regular" restaurants where you go straight to your table and relax and enjoy. I can tolerate that method of service if it includes PERCH!

I do not miss 4 seasons whatsoever. Never liked it even when growing up. Sorry! I like my toes in the sand, if you will! Although, when I do visit WI for a football game, I do try to time it when the colors are at their peak! Awesome!

I miss inexpensive CHEESE! Wisonsin cheese in FL. is considered a delicacy, and you only find it in the deli aisle, and be willing to pay over $6.00 a pound for basic cheddar/colby! Aged Cheddar? I just paid $18.00 a pound, only because I was craving it. (and that was at SAM's Club!)
Cheese curds? HA HA.....at Christmas I order from a cheese factory in WI and stock up, they won't ship here until late fall because of the heat, and I stock up then. But the shipping costs pretty much make up for the cheap cheese. But at least I get my curds.

I laughed my head off yesterday at the grocery store. For the upcoming "holiday season" they had a new display featuring Hillshire Farm Summer Sausage. The sign read: "NEW ITEM! No cooking required! Just slice and eat!" The girl handing out the samples looked perplexed, as well as the brave souls who were tasting it and looking at it in a funny way.

Oh yea, BEER here is very expensive! And order a brandy at a bar and they'll look at you like you have 3 eyes and a horn growing out of your forehead. (and spend 20 minutes getting a manager to go find a bottle, usually Cognac) Plus the drinks here, a basic Gin & Tonic is going to cost you at least $5-6. Happy Hour? Forget it! But, no matter, I only go to bars when friends visit!

I miss "pickled" stuff, like mushrooms, brussel sprouts, etc., that you see bartenders put in drinks up there. Here, it's either a lime or an olive. Period. And I miss those little glasses of beer when you order a bloody mary too!

I miss the accents! I never really had one, my family was originally from the South, although when I get with my Cheesehead friends I suddenly start talking like them....they do the same thing when they come down here and pick up "Suthin' Slang". i.e., "We're fixin' to hit the beach ya'll!"

I think after being gone for so long, I have turned into a true southerner though.....I cannot do without real cornbread, grits, collard greens, shrimp po'boys, real iced tea, cajun crawdad boils, gumbo, FRESH GULF SEAFOOD, biscuits and gravy, chess pie and a waitress saying to me "what else can I git fer you honey pie?"

oops, I forgot......I do miss snow on the ground one time of year...Christmas! The lights on my Palm Trees just don't cut it, but Santa sitting on a sailboat with lights during the "Christmas Parade" here is kind of cool!

And I do miss the people as well! Very warm and gracious folks!

Re: What do you miss most? Least? What's different?

I do miss the snow alot and really do miss the snow except for the shoveling and scrapping my car windows every morning. Here in costa rica there are some great places for fish fries, and some places (restaurants) where you fish and they cook it for you on the spot, thats something different. And tell me if this looks right? Also I still watch football and will always root for the packers. Palm trees with christmas, man is that wrong. Still miss wisconsin....
