Lakes, Rivers, & Streams

‘More’ water found in Wisconsin

Thanks to advancements in technology, Wisconsin residents can say they have even more water to fish.

New electronic data shows Wisconsin has 84,474 miles of stream and river, which is a 26,776 mile increase from earlier estimates, according to the state DNR Web site. New calculations also show 15,057 lakes covering 1.2 million acres, up from 900,000 acres.

Cool post, RedRaven. What's the source?

Anyone out there with a revved-up recent computer should try earth.google.com for really cool (and basic is free) satellite imagery that will take you right down to look at your rooftop! Great way to find rivers and streams in the woods.

Some definitions of 'streams' (technically, "navigable waterways") are bothersome. My Scout troop did some tree planting for a local quarry and the 'navigable waterway' was about six inches wide and two inches deep. It was a dry time, but I don't believe one could've paddled 50 feet in all but flood conditions. Oh well.

Still, neat post. For info on streams and rivers you can paddle, try "Canoe Trails of Southern Wisconsin" - click thru the Amazon link on theBubbler's home page so we get credit!

Regards,
Keith

Thanks Keith,
I do not remember my source but it may come back to me later.
The site you referenced is the old www.keyhole.com site. I have been using this for awile now and I also had already linked it to theBubbler, but as you show the web address has changed since google has took it over but it still powered by Keyhole. Maybe my link at theBubbler should be updated also since it forwards to the new address.
Thanks for the heads up on the desktop version of earth.google.com, I was not aware of this new feature. I downloaded it this evening.
