What are your favorite books for kids?

I've got a ton of favorites for kids. Before listing a few, I recommend anything that is a Caldecott or Newbury Medal winner.

My favorite as a kid (about second or third grade; bought a copy again last year, used because it is out of print) is Louis Slobodkin's, A Spaceship Under the Apple Tree. This is a wonderful little tale of a boy spending the summer at Grandma's country house where a spaceship lands and the boy gets his new friend, "Marty", to join scouts with him.

Another huge favorite I've re-read as an adult is the Madeleine L'Engle (sp?) series: A Wrinkle in Time, A Swiftly Tilting Planet, and A Wind in the Door.

Frosty the Snowman was read to me a million times. A big old hard cover. I read the same copy to all of my kids about a million times apiece.

So, what do you recommend for the little ones. We'll start our own reading rainbow here.

Regards,
Keith

One of my favorite subjects!

I love to collect very old children's books. I'm always looking for them in Estate Sales, or Antique Stores.

When I was quite young my mom and older sister use to read to me alot. One series use to be my favorite called The Uncle Arthur Bedtime Stories. The series they read out of was the older series even then, I think maybe the 40's? After I grew up I searched and with the help of Ebay and a great used book store downtown Milwaukee was able to aquire several sets.

I was a huge fan of Lassie when I was young always being 'glued' to the t.v. at 6:00 on Sunday nights. So of course any type of a Lassie book was my favorite too. Lassie come home, Lad the Dog, even the Golden Book, Lassie. lol

So many books. I will have to think of some more....

Thanks for a great post Keith!

You could also include favorite videos on here also, even though Books are by far the best for children! But I would highly recommend the Wee Sing in Sillyville, and The Mouse on the Motorcycle if you are in need of some really great movies for your young kids to watch.

Also a great book series to read and also to watch the shows would have to be the Little House on the Paraire Series.

I love the series and watched all of them with my oldest daughter (she will be 30 this July) and she had the whole series of books and read them.

Now my youngest daughter loves this series. (will be 14 this June). She has the collection of the first and second DVD's of the shows, and has read pretty much the full collection of stories.

I love books!

In 2nd grade, I enjoyed Charlottes Web. In 3rd grade, I enjoyed poetry and Japanese Haikus, introduced to me by my grandma. In jr. high, I always brought home the biggest books. I liked mysteries and suspense stories my favorites then were by Alfred Hitchcock - they were both big and mysterious.

For young children (toddler and preschool age) I really love Dr. Seuss aka Theodore Liepsig. Dr. Seuss is fun to read and really silly to listen to. My husband read so much Dr. Seuss, he once found himself reciting it outloud, while working on a construction site, much to his fellow workers suprise lOl!

My absolute favorite - NO DOUBT - is a great bedtime story for the young and young at heart - "The Velveteen Rabbit" by Margery Williams Bianco. If you get it on video or DVD, try to find the one narrated by Meryl Streep, she tells it the very best! There are many versions.

Just the other night my husband, youngest daughter and I were all discussing the books we were currently reading. We do this often, but this night they both made a comment that all I seem to have read for the past few years is "technical stuff".... I had to pause... it's true. 15 years ago, I never thought I would be so facinated by technology and/or computers. I used a Mac to organize inventory in a database for my boss. But now I read everything I can about web development and design, different programming languages, rss, internet and search technology, how to save our environment from e-waste, and I have watched most closely... marketing and SEO. I love it!

But, I can also help you with BOOKS ONLINE!
If you're trying to locate a difficult to find book or an out of print book, just go to this web page:
http://www.danfulwiler.com/bargainsh...site/books.htm
You can easily search by the book author or title and their prices are extremely affordable. Check it out when you get a chance!

Some of my favorites were " The cat ate my gymsuit" "Julie of the Wolves" " Island of the Blue Dophins" "Ole Yeller" "Black Beauty" and any of the Black Stallion books. I also remember a series about a boy named Henry and his dog Ribsy,, there were several in the series and I wish I could find a copy of them now. And any book with a horse in the story always got my attention.

My younger kids remember Henry and his dog Mudge series. That's about as close as we can get.
