Have you started planting your garden or is the fear of frost making you wait a little? Share what you're growing in this thread.

Re: How far along is your summer garden?

I garden in pots. So far, I have a Beef Steak Tomato plant in.

I'll gather the what not alls to plant some green peppers, and Brussels sprouts. The neighbor farmer said he would allow me to plant a couple rows in the field adjacent to my apartment building.

Of course, BEETS will be featured again this year, as they are so wonderful pickled.

I have a variety of herbs growing...the sweet basil is first to come up, and is doing well. Another week or so, and I'll have a group of rosemary planted.

Re: How far along is your summer garden?

I plan on doing tomato plants in patio pots and cucumbers along the fence line in the back if there is enough sun.

We use to put in a lot more in the back garden but the trees have added way to much shade for things to grow well now. I let the space go for the last few years but this Spring we decided to till it under and start fresh with planting perennial flowers, hostas, ferns, etc and putting wood chips down. So far we have it tilled under...the rest will hopefully come in the next couple of weeks.

Still working on it...but like all projects once you get started other ideas pop up and next thing you know a project takes on another life. lol We are now putting in a large brick patio off our deck and new flower beds and extend an existing bed. So much work!

Re: How far along is your summer garden?

My big ambition for Memorial Day weekend was to clean out my car and catch up on some reading.

Instead, helped weed beds on two sides of the house and planted several dozen perennials by the house and a flat of annuals around the flag pole.

Got a half dozen shrubs in, plus a couple of "dog birch" that are like river birch but only get 8 to 10 feet tall.

This is about the fifth year in a row of heavy planting. Hope to be done in a couple of years because we'll be able divide our own plants.

Got landscape fabric from Johnsons Way - Nutri-Pak Fertilizer, Nutri-Pak Plant Fertilizer, BOBBEX Animal Repellents, Deer Repellents (and plenty of Nutri-Paks!) and installed the fabric in my vegetable garden after tilling it three times. Used an 8 horse tiller and the work went twice as fast as when I've used a 6 horse machine.

I worked four times as hard on the garden last year for half the results because of weeds, so the fabric is my hope to spend more time gardening and less time weeding.

Got 10 tomato plants in, 12 peppers, a few brussel sprouts, onion sets, 6 cabbages, two rows of carrots and a row of beets.

Hope to get the corn, spinach, radishes, and a couple other row plants in soon. Also need to peel back the fabric to make mounds for cucumbers, melons, pumpkins and squash.

Besides all that we pulled a carpet and started laying tile in the dining room, and painted as well.

After this weekend it is going to be an ibuprofen week.

Regards,
Keith

We have about 8 herbs for container gardening on the deck, and I'd like to get a cherry- or grape-tomato plant or two for deck pots as well. Love to just reach out and pluck a snack!

Regards,
Keith
