What is the greatest threat to Wisconsin's wildlife?

Are Wisconsin's native species being protected, or do we need to work harder to preserve their habitats? Let us know what you think.

Re: What is the greatest threat to Wisconsin's wildlife?

In southeastern Wisconsin the Southeastern Regional Plan Commission has identified and encourages protection of natural areas and critical species habitats. Unfortunately it is up to the property owners to want to protect these areas and it is hard for local governments to force these areas to be protected. If funds were available these areas could be purchased by local, county or state governments.
The good news is the longer I am on some of these local and regional boards, it becomes more apparent that more people are stepping forward to protect or fight to protect some of these ares.
I guess small steps are better then none at all.

Re: What is the greatest threat to Wisconsin's wildlife?

I've got an idea. Lets stop sub-dividing such big lots. and when we do sub-divide there should be a required amount of trees planted per acre as well. Certain types of trees perhaps. Also, does a land owner of many acres have to pay high taxes if they want to keep their land protected? Behind my fathers property was to be a 100 year flood plan/plain of some sort, but Halquist (stone quarry) sold the land to the government where an armory and park now sit.

I think this should be required, too. It's so ironic to see these McMansion subdivisions being named "Misty Woods" or "Scenic Pines" when all the trees have been cut down! Then the McMansion owners complain when deer eat the flowers and coyotes eat their pom-a-poos. These animals were there first and need someplace to live.
