Re: Which Halloween activity is your favorite?

Even though Halloween is not my favorite event it is in my favorite season.

My kids still love to go trick or treating and I enjoy watching them have so much fun. But I do see that the whole candy thing is really fading out with so many of our neighbors not participating anymore. It's sad but with the times the way they are you just can't be too careful.

What we do is check over any candy that the kids actually do eat and then leave the rest for the Great Pumpkin to take away and then he leaves a present for each child to find in the morning.

I noticed the same thing. We didn't have a lot of trick or treaters and many of the houses on the block were dark. I didn't recognize most of the trick or treaters as kids from our neighborhood. I think they drove into the burbs from Milwaukee.

We have the most Halloween decorations on our street, so I felt sort of obligated to hand out candy. I was sick and didn't feel like getting up all night, but if I didn't hand out candy, I was worried the kids would vandalize our decorations. Changin' times.

Re: Which Halloween activity is your favorite?

I remember when we first moved on this street and my now grown kids were in their teens and old enough to do their own thing and my youngest was only 1. So my little one and I would sit out and hand treat bags out. I would count them so I had an idea of how many kids we had and one time I handed out over 130 bags. Over the years the numbers have gone way down.

Now that our younger kids are growing up we go with them and feel as if I am not missing to many kids coming to our house since I check from time to time at our road and not to many are walking. I try to make it back here to hand some out but it's really nothing like it use to be.

I don't mind to much and almost wish we did not do the candy thing anymore. It just isn't safe really. And when you think about it you teach your kids all year long to never, ever take candy from strangers and then you let them do it on Halloween. That is why we really are glad for the Great Pumpkin that comes and takes the candy away.

Re: Which Halloween activity is your favorite?

I love to dress up and go trick or treating. This year I was a pirate...I took the nephew who was the blue power ranger out and about for the 2 hours. I had just as much fun as he did.
I have noticed less and less kids in our neighborhood over the last 12 years, not to mention less and less neighbors participating too. We all know that candy is bad for us but that isn't the point is it...the point is to dress up and have fun!
(I have many opinions about being a parent and what I have seen over the last 20 years but, there are just that, my opinions.)

Re: Which Halloween activity is your favorite?

Well, I'm from a very small village of less than 1,000 people. Halloweening is still BIG around here! It is not unusual to have upwards of 200 trick or treaters. Some years I have hung a homemade BIG, black SPIDER (over 4 feet across) with beady little eyes, in the pinacle of the house above the front door for the trick or treat event. "She" is complete with her own "spider sack" which of course is where the treats are found. When little kids come to the door "Charlotte" comes down really slow so as to not freighten them (although some toddlers won't even approach the house.) Big Kids sometimes find the spider free falling in front of them.

I enjoy seeing all the cool costumes (so I like a daytime event) and tell the trick or treaters when they are wearing a really awesome costume. I also reward polite kids with an extra treat when they remember to say "Thank you." It is amazing how quickly others coming up the walk remember to also say "Thank you!"
