Energy Part 2

In response to the article appearing in most major newspapers across the country concerning the $8.4 billion profit reported by Exxon. Concern over profits by this oil company has brought about accusations of gouging the American consumer. According to the article, "CEOs from Exxon and its industry peers have already appeared twice at Senate hearings and were asked to justify their profits shortly after reporting them to shareholders." This has to be an American first. I have never heard of a company being called to justify it's profits. One wonders if an extension of this idea could be made to other companies in other industries as well.

Per the article, "Lawmakers believe the profits are made on the backs of consumers who are paying a national average of $2.91 a gallon - 68 cents more than last year. Exxon says a strong commodities market combined with fortuitous planning and prudent management are producing record numbers." This should make Americans ask the fundamental question: what is the difference between what a public non-profit utility company provides and what a private for-profit oil company provides? Afterall, they both sell energy to all United States citizens. The difference is that natural gas and electricity are sold in the form of a public good whereas oil is sold in the form of a private good. Accordingly, on the grounds of promoting national security, the United States Congress should convert all oil companies to utility companies. This would eliminate the windfall profits and force the oil industry to earn just enough income to cover operating expenses just as natural gas and electric utility companies are required to do. The resulting drop in gasoline prices would further stimulate the economy and lighten the energy stranglehold upon the United States by the Middle East. It would also eliminate the influence of the oil lobby. In this case, desperate times call for deliberate measures.

OH, OH, YES, YES!!!

Let us too go down the "Cesar Chaves Road"!! I'm sure that Congress can legislate more dependable, timely delivered, and much, much cheaper (like about $.08/gallon) petroleum supply.

hmmm, wonder how Congress will make up for the BILLION$ (I'm too lazy to actually look up the figures) lost from the petroleum industries' corporate income taxes. Is anyone aware that they (BIG EVIL CORPORATIONS) actually pay taxes on their evil profits??? 8O

They pay less in taxes than we poorer Americans do and the longer Buy-my-vote-for-your-tax-cut politicians (who right this minute seem to mostly be Republicans, though I know that hasn't always been so) stay in office, the worse the disparency will get.

But I think we can look at the old USSR to see what happens with completely socialized essentials. I'm not sure I want to see government corruption replacing corporate corruption -- at least the corporations occasionally get sued by private citizens or brought up on criminal charges. Rather, a good mix of the two (private and socialized) is probably most efficient. Make sure that people can get the bare essentials at a livable price and then it's the extras that get price-hiked.

Not that I believe that will happen. Either way, essentials will always be overpriced. We're captive consumers. I can't use less fuel to heat my apartment in the winter, nor can I use less gas than it takes me get to and from work every day, no matter how high they jack the price.

It can actually be simpler...

First, get the government entirely out of it, including silly regulations on automobiles. I wonder how many vehicles which do not burn gas, will be produced without excessive govt regulations.

Second, the oil companies speak of futures, which is a fine red herring. They are charging today's gas prices on gas they produced yesterday, based on what might happen tomorrow. The gas at your gas station, in the big tanks underground, was not bought the very second they raise or lower the price. It was purchased last, for example, Wednesday, at probably $1 under what they charge you. However, since tomorrow's prices will be higher, and they wouldn't risk their money, they raise the price today. Of course, since tomorrow the price may not rise, it stays the same, and they make more money.

Third, the last rush of gas price increase, although I don't follow it religiously, seems to have happend after Katrina, when the TWO oil pumps were destroyed. As though that really affected oil production in for US oil and gas.

Futures are tricky. But I figure the price they paid is close what should be put up on the board, of course, adding their profits. But if at 3 pm tomorrow, a tornado wipes out one oil drill in texas, don't raise the gas prices all over Wisconsin 25 cents to compensate. This actually is more ethical, and closer to what grocery stores and lumber yards do (since they also sell products affect by the commodities market).

I was a bit upset at record oil profits, and this is the result of rising prices due to wars and hurricanes, yet profits are made. However, I don't see the government enforcing a larger tax is going to help though.

Also, keep in mind, that a year ago, the tax you paid on gas was 48.5 cents per gallon. I would guess it's increased slightly since. Oh how the horse and buggy days look better and better. Or maybe just getting a moped would do the trick.

Congress has many inefficient programs running; Social security (an essentially broke program, paying people more than they put in, at the expense of people working now), War on Drugs (you want to talk about who pays less taxes, a billion dollar a year industry goes untaxed year after year, yet costs you and I millions a year), etc. Let's not add gasoline randomly taxed or govern-mentally () disributed petrol products to the long list.

Congress and the Senate were purchased long ago, as were people's votes with their own tax dollars. I wouldn't consider todays govt as a newly purchased branch of authority.

Crys, Watchman, Well put. It's hard to think of anything the government is involved in that works well. Some things may work, but not economical or well.

I work in a large business where I'm part of a team that has to set and follow a yearly budget. It's never easy, but it has to be done to be profitable. I'm often frustrated watching government bodies fumble around with budget issues and solving problems by raising taxes.

It doesn't matter if it's the local school system (where if you don't give them more money they'll claim you don't care for children) or the fed's with ag programs (where we pay to not grow crops), as long as the money is easy to come by in the tax base, there's not alot of effort to tighten the belts.

A little off topic, but the point remains.

Mark

I'm all for companies making a profit, I just don't understand why the Oil Companies are getting BILLIONS in tax breaks every year.
