We talk about politics at work to a certain degree. Well, one of my coworkers and I do anyway. I'm at one end of the political spectrum, he's at the other. We like to argue about politics. I'm not sure how the other people in the office feel though

Politics and Work
It would be great to be able to discuss political issues without polarizing, hot-headed dispute.
I've discussed politics with clients an average of less than once a year over the last twenty years and regret half the conversations because of knee-jerk, "my way or the highway" reactions. No discussion, no debate, no enlightenment of either party to the talk.
It would be nice to be able to advance a viewpoint, listen to another and at least improve the level of understanding each party has of the other.
I've seen DanW's "PolitiCoinz"! They are an excellent means to introducing a political subject on a personal "under the radar" kind of level. I like his philosophy: let's talk about the issues instead of voting based on TV commercials and sound bytes.
Regards,
Keith

We do discuss politics at work, though most discussions do not get that heated. If anything, they turn into a conversation about something completely irrelevant. I think we have a good mix of beliefs, and even better, a group of individuals that is respectful towards others.

Its about team
Kris,
I will be interested to see how others answer the question, as for your comments...yours has been similar to my experience. I have found that when politics are discussed at work I have learned a little bit about how my coworkers see the world. In many ways getting to know them better has strengthen our team and created platforms (like you said) for laughter, jokes and other discussions. Thanks for taking the time to think about the question I posted.
(FYI) By July our website will offer you the capabilities to send (FREE) e-politigrams, which are like e-greeting cards that are patriotic/political in nature.
Be informed, get involved and have fun!
Dan

Especially now we talk.
Hello Fellow Wisconsinites
From Duluth/Superior
I work at a food processing plant that is in one week from now laying off a 100 or so workers. It's a union shop. Especially now we talk a lot of politics but usually from the liberal democratic perspective. I am very conservative and a republican myself. I do see the discussions as a good thing though.
I find being mostly ears and using my mouth a little less enables me to understand better where they are coming from. I don't see their connection between the plant closure and layoff, and it being the fault of George Bush though. That's the accusation I hear all the time. I believe it's more that the company wants to mechanize more of the processing which displaces human labor and I see that it's because of a weak UFCW. But the liberal mind wants to blame Bush.
This entire area is predominately democratic. The economy up here is suffering because of local regulations, restrictions, high property taxes imposed by local city, county, and state governing bodies which are democratic. I wish they could admit their failure and not continue to say it's because of Bush. I've lived up here for almost 10 years and as I see it this area has been losing economic strength since way before Bush ever took office. It sure didn't improve through the Clinton's years.

Re: Politics and Work
I do discuss politics at work. Here is a blog I had written a few days after the election.
Quote:
You think ...I think.......
We all have are own opinion. But remember my friends......YOU MUST always fight for what you believe as your values. If your ideas and thoughts have been erased by a negative ....you lost your fight all together. This election is a good example. A president has been chosen against my better judgment. I have only one recourse to this issue. Continue to voice my opinion, read the facts, and always talk about the issue with friends, family, and co-workers even if the ideas we may share are of difference. This is America my friends and if you FAIL to communicate about differences you have lost your right to freedom. The minute you give up your right to this freedom - your thoughts have NO input on the issues.

I do not believe that politics should be discussed with aggression. Opinions should be voiced, but on the other hand you must always listen to the other side before putting up a wall to others viewpoints. I am always open to opinions of others which opens my thoughts to ideas on both viewpoints.

I talk about politics everywhere
I do talk about politics at my workplace, or rather, my former workplace. My better judgement tells me that this is a mistake. Problem is, I don't always follow my better judgement, especially when it comes to discussing politics. The topics interests me too much to resist talking talkling about it, anywhere. So many times, these poltical talks get heated. Maybe that't the appeal to me? Who knows?
Thanks,
Charlton Conine
