As if the recession isn't slowing down the spending enough as it is, we have to create another reason to cut-back on spending! 10% would kill internet shopping and hurt sites like theBubbler!!! {:^`(........

The VAT tax discussion has come up several times amongst my co-workers & it shocks me how many are FOR it! They try to explain it in ways that makes sense to them, but some of us (ME) just can't see the bright side of it!
I see the $50 a month that i now pay in health insurance going way UP, plus every purchase i make going up as well.. where is the good in that for me?? there isn't any IMO

It's probably because they still believe that all these new taxes will only effect the rich somehow. It's unrealistic and the simple math doesn't support it.
Here's something to remember about a VAT tax as opposed to a straight up sales tax. A VAT tax is hard to see. The government get's alot of money but you can't figure out how. So instead of buying a new T.V. for $1000 and paying a 15% sales tax that angers you, you now just pay $1150 for the same T.V. without a "sales tax". The government is still getting the $150, you just don't have the tax in your face.
That's how people like your co-workers get suckered.

such a scary thought... I struggle just to survive now & the thought of everything going up even more freaks me out. How anyone (besides those imposing them) can see the good in this tax is beyond me.
With the deficits at a historic high, these former heads of the Federal Reserve may prefer to pay for President Obama's spending spree with taxes instead of borrowed money. But tax and spend is no better than borrow and spend. Why not just stop spending so much?
For Mr. Obama, a VAT, which appears on the surface to simply tax goods and services at the cash register, is the ideal tax. At a 17% tax rate, for example, he can quickly increase taxes by $1.5 trillion a year in a partially hidden way. A VAT is by its nature hidden, because no one files a tax return.
That's crazy stuff... They see the economy start to come back (just a little bit) & they consider screwing us a bit more... I don't see us ever getting back to any kind of normalcy... simply disappointing.
You know....I don't necessarily like be right all the time.
Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC) Debt Reduction Task Force........report outlines measures to “blow up the income tax and start over,” .........and impose a national “debt reduction sales tax,” Rivlin told The Fiscal Times during a recent interview in her Brookings Institution office.
The proposed national sales tax known as a Value Added Tax (VAT) will be highly controversial because it would be imposed on top of existing state sales taxes — potentially a blow to the economic recovery.
