OK, enough of that for a bit....just ran into a lot of interesting stuff.
I'll add more for housing and heating soon enough. Very passive to build with overhangs, to have double door entryways (inner and outer doors) or entrances inside of patios, south facing windows...all sorts of ways to be energy efficient in housing.
Light bulbs! Most of mine are now the low watt, natural sunlight white compact fluorescent variety, purchased on sale at Menards, with a rebate as big or bigger than the sale price. Better light, lower cost and last much longer.
Trees! Plant shade trees close enough to shade from summer sun but allow winter sun!
Simple stuff we all need to do individually. Hope to hear more of these and great, grand ideas here.

Peak Moment 86: As an organizer in the American Institute of Architects, Chris Stafford has long promoted sustainable design. As a natural builder, he worked with straw bale and clay in Greece and Saudi Arabia. For his Port Townsend home, he considered site, size, materials and energy. The 1500 sq. ft home uses mostly non-toxic materials (and fewer of them), foam insulation, metal roofing, solar hot water for space heating, photovoltaics for electricity, and an innovative rainwater collector for landscape irrigation. An Engineer Examines a Town's Energy Future
27:59
Here's one that interests me a lot. A town engineer talking about his town's waste of money, money that goes out of town to pay for energy. Are any Wisconsin towns doing anything like this?
Peak Moment 125: How much energy does a town consume? Brian Corzilius sleuthed that out for Willits, California, and got a big surprise: in this community of 13,000 people, nearly 25% of personal after-tax earnings (about $30 million annually) leaves town to pay for energy - gasoline, diesel, electricity and natural gas. His inventory grew into an energy independence report which identified opportunities for local fuels to replace the external inputs. His local "energy mix" considers solar, wind, hydro, biomass, wood gasifiers, co-generation, and sewage plant methane to create electricity. A model for any community, his energy report is online at http://www.willitseconomiclocalizatio...

Cultivating a Suburban Foodshed
24:38
Here's a real Utopian premise. To paraphrase one of the Kennedys, some men see things that are and ask why. I dream of things that never were and ask, "Why not?"
Peak Moment 123: Landscape architect Owen Dell has a vision: transforming suburban neighborhoods into shared "foodsheds" with food-bearing and native plants, and even chickens. Neighbors can start by finding edible plants already growing in their yards, maybe remove fences, plant what works best in each location. Best of all, share the resulting food abundance with one another ("Hey, it's lemon time. Come and get 'em!") and build the social network with shared food potlucks. Tour Owen's own edible landscape yard, including a rooftop container garden complete with visiting cat. [ http://www.owendell.com , www.mesaexchange.org]

We need to allow full drilling to access our oil reserves as well as push alternate fuels so that we can got off of oil as much as possible in the future.

Re: Energy Independence for Wisconsin and the United States...
I don't think drilling for oil is the answer. The oil companies would love more control of the oil we still have left here.
You think gas prices are bad this year just think, if we drill drill drill like Bush wants then we use up our oil what would happen. OPEC would have full control over what we pay at the pump. Other countries could twist our arm into doing what they want or they cut us off from oil. As long as we have untapped oil we have some leverage.
One of our problems is car manufacturers. They could build more fuel efficient cars but they don't.
GM built and leased the EV1 with the option to buy. They ended up taking all but a few of the cars and Smashed them. Why would GM take such a huge loss on these cars?
GM is getting back into the electric car market. They have the Volt, price tag of $40,000. This bad boy can go 40 miles on a single charge.. Wow 40 miles, way to go GM. GM-VOLT : Chevy Volt Electric Car Site About GM-Volt.com
Re: Energy Independence for Wisconsin and the United States...
We currently have around 11 years of oil available to us, if we started drilling now we could help to lower the cost a fuel while pushing alternatives so that within that 11 years we can be free of oil as much as possible.

Re: Energy Independence for Wisconsin and the United States...
New nuclear power plants could give us all the energy we need. Unfortunately we haven't built a new one in years. Nuclear is safe, clean, and cheap. We don't build them because people associated nuclear with radiation and safety issues, but improvements in the last several years have only increased the safety of nuclear plants.
