An Inconvenient Electric Bill

We all do it but the famous should be more mindfull of that because these day there are eyes all over just waiting for them to make a mistake.
It's not like the Gore's have a huge family but consuming 12 times as much electricty as the average houshold makes me speechless. Just when you think, here is a man on a noble mission!!!!!!! You read this!!!!!!

Gore's documentary film "An Inconvenient Truth" won an Oscar on Sunday for chronicling his campaign against global warming.

Utility records show the Gore family paid an average monthly electric bill of about $1,200 last year for its 10,000-square foot home.

The Gores used about 191,000 kilowatt-hours in 2006, according to bills reviewed by The Associated Press spanning the period from Feb. 3, 2006, to Jan. 5. That is far more than the typical Nashville household, which uses about 15,600 kilowatt-hours per year.

There is more to the story so go here for their justification.
opps sorry I messed up the link, it's now fixed, try it

I was waiting for someone to bring this up. Thank you j10ason.

Al Gore is part of what I call the "do-gooder" or "feel good" crowd.

Hipocryte. His message doesn't match his lavious lifestyle. Typical do-gooder telling everyone else what to do without doing it themselves. Believe me, this is not a Democrat/Republican issue.

Always be mindful of the "do-gooder" mindset when you here the speeches and press conferences. Be suspicious. Don't believe most of what you here from the press or T.V. Believe your gut, it's probably right.

What did you think of the celebrities showing up at the Academy awards in Hybrid vehicles? You think they actually drive these on a daily basis? Or was it an opportunity to "feel good" and show us what we should do?

A person could start a whole new thread on high profile hipocryte's. Starting with the Governer and the ole "I won't raise taxes" bit.

That link is dead, j10asen. Thanks anyhow.
I'll comment on algore, and his ilk.
Actually, I'm not surprised by algores electric bill. He's playing the part of a hypocrite. I wonder why he isn't self sufficent , off the grid...as far as utilities are concerned. Personally, I'd mandate solar panels on every new house being built. There are some real monster houses going up around here, with beautiful sloping roofs that are crying out for solar. Wind Mills are'nt really all that ugly, and the birds perch on top of them. They give the birds a place to rest....that's a different topic.

Please get your facts straight.

Al Gore pays four times the standard rate because he's paying for green electricity. A fact that the conservative failure of a hit job "report" left out is that he's renovating to include solar panels with the intention of getting off the grid or selling back electricity, and that when the price difference is ignored, his mansion actually uses less electricity than many of the more average sized houses serviced by that company, according to the electric company in question.

People should be lauding him for being willing to pay extra for the newer, greener technologies, instead just going for whatever's cheapest like most people do.

The report I heard was comparing kilowatt hours of use. Comparing his to the "average" home.

Now I'm sure the report was meant to be less than favorable for him. I'm also sure all the facts were not reported, but I think the overall message is the same.

I didn't happen to record the report, so I can't go back and verify the exact story. It's just from memory of this morning.

The way the company figures the bill is by taking the real number of kW used and multiplying it by four to get the price for the greener electricity. So his bill states four times what he's actually using.

This is according to the electric company in question, as reported by several news sources that aren't Faux News, including MSNBC, which is the first (but not only) place I saw that this was explained.

I still didn't get a chance to research this at all. Watching the grandaughter today.

Crys, if what you say is true, that's not much of an incentive for people to go green. I don't understand the reasoning behind that billing system. I'd sure like to figure this one out.

Still doesn't explain the excessive use of LP either.

Oh ya, I agree it was a conservative group that started all this, but you had to expect that. It'd work the other way too.

Alright, I did a little reading up on this story. Now, this is my opinion which I'm sure will seem like Gore bashing. But....

As the self-proclaimed leader of the Green movement, Al Gore should've understood that he would be scrutinized. The motives of the conserative group may be in question, but the Gore's didn't dispute the figures other than to say that they work at home and are basically "carbon neutral".

What they've done is calculate their "carbon footprint" which is some mathematical way of determining how much overall pollution you are responsible for. After the calculation, your supposed to take steps to reduce your cabon emissions by doing different things like the Gore's have in some instances. Solar panels, hybrid cars and fluorescent light bulbs.

The part of the story that really makes the Gore's seem hypocritical to me is that using 20 times more power(not the bill, the actual kilowatts used), than the average home is somehow "offset" by purchasing carbon credits. That's where you buy some sort of credit to encourage someone, somewhere, to reduce their carbon emissions.

So to me, if you're the leader of the Green movement, you should be reducing consumption, no matter how it's produced, to really show your convictions. Not just consume excessively and claim to be "carbon neutral" because you can afford to buy some sort of "carbon credit" to justify it.

To me, it'd be like Hugh Hefner proclaiming to be the leader of the morality movement. As long as he was bedding down girls with high morals and purchasing morality credits, he could be "moral neutral".

Let's not forget that he has FOUR mansions. I think it's great that he's making people more aware of the environment....I just find it really disgusting that he is pressuring everyone to do it and do it now or we're all going to burn up.

The "carbon credit" deal is, you give ...let's say $100,000 to an environmentical group, and they use that money to plant trees, or some such deal, and the trees will take care of the pollution you cause by maintaining a pulse. Guilt penance for being alive.
I see it all as being here to serve me, and I try to do my part to maintain it.
Unnecessary guilt kills, or at least drives you crazy.

I find it interesting that this story didn't last more than 2 days. Seems like this had the makings of a real scandal if the major news outlets wanted to make it as such. But I don't think they want to beat down one of the "leaders" of the anti-Bush brigade with the elections coming up.

It's like I've stated before, it's all about "feeling good" about something without any real sacrifice to yourself, just imposing it on others.
