No pollster called me.... :? Yes, my world does revolve around me - just as your world revolves around you.

Of course in this "democracy", which actually is supposed to be a representative republic according to the US and State Constitutions, unless your are one of a politically correct minority like gay, atheist, illegal immigrant, phonographer, protester, etc., there is not the tiniest shred of compromise considered.

What ever happed to CHOICE? Remember CHOICE? Oh yeah, that only applies to women who find a pregnancy/baby inconvenient/whatever; that life can be snuffed out quickly and legally. But a smoker is not supposed to enjoy his filthy, life threatening, tax paying legal 'addiction' in a designated establishment while all the 'pristine lunged' are way across town at the non-smoking karioki(sp) bar.

Those whining and moaning about the so called Christian Right effecting their lives by decree through government are doing the EXACT SAME DAM* THING!

The smoking ban is just feel good politics. It's been the hot button issue for the past few years. Advocates want to feel good that they are saving lives and "doing something" for the ignorants out there.

Don't fool yourselves, this is a political issue, not a health issue. There's alot of health related issues out there that if they got the same attention as smoking, would have a much larger impact on the overall, health of our people.

Example: Doctors over-prescribing medications. That's a much larger issue than smoking and creates drug abuse and addiction escpecially in kids. Isn't "saving our children" also the popular buzz? Guess what, money's at the root of that problem too.

Another example: Obesity. There's a snake's nest you don't want to jump into.

Anyone remember Radon gas? That causes just as much (almost) lung cancer as smoking. It's just not as popular for politicians and the feel good crowd.

Finally: Gambling, not an official health issue, but it's considered a disease by some. That's actually State sponsered. Again, it's the money.

In today's politics, it all goes back to the cash.

When I smoked it was my choice. When I quit, it was my choice. And yes, I was always courteous and mindfull of others.

Mark

Survey finds majority of Wisconsin residents support smoking ban

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

February 26, 2007

MADISON - Nearly two-thirds of Wisconsin residents support a statewide ban on smoking in all bars, restaurants and work places, according to a survey released Monday that was sponsored by groups backing the ban.

The Wisconsin survey was conducted by the Republican-leaning Public Opinion Strategies and the Democratic-leaning Mellman Group. The poll was sponsored by the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids and SmokeFree Wisconsin.

The survey had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.
It's been my experience that Polls always support the group conducting the Poll.

I have no faith in, and ignore all Polls.

My world doesn't just 'revovle around me' it includes my children. As a parent I just want them to have a fair shake at a good and healthy life. Maybe that is why I have always taught them good hygene, to eat correctly, to say NO to drugs, they are in bully prevention club at school, they have learned decent dress codes, taught to have morals, etc. So why would I want them to be subjected to second hand smoke in their innocent and young lungs just because we decide to stop in at al local place for something to eat?

No one is telling you to stop your nasty habit of smoking. But when you say it is not fair and go on about your 'rights'? What about all the high percent that doesn't smoke? We have to let everything revolve around your habit of choice?

I think asking everyone not to smoke in public places is being fair all the way around. And I for one is for it. You wouldn't want something very offensive sitting right next to you while you are trying to eat do you?

Maybe someone should find what bothers you and make you be subjected to it over and over where ever you try to go in public. It's the same thing.

So not trying to take this to a level of insults because I am simply not in that mood frame...just trying to point out that since they have found that smoking is unhealthy then everyone that chooses to smoke should abide by rules since smokers choices affect everyone around them.

Wished they called me, I would have told them YES! Ban every public place.

I 'insulted' no one.

And you and your children have the CHOICE to patronize non-smoking establishments right now, there are many, many, many of them: all retailers, most restaurants, even bars, theaters, dance halls, skating rinks,
you name it and it is non-smoking.
How about maybe 25% of the taverns/cafes in the city/town/county/whatever be able to allow the yet legal practice of smoking; and the non-smokers can take their kids to the other 75% of the taverns-cafes that are smoke free. I'm sure the local Cracker Barrel, Perkins, Dairy Queen, MacDonalds, WalMart, Target, Home Depot, etc., would not be clambering to be among that 25% that allows smoking.
Right now you and your children have to really go out of your way to find second hand smoke in a "public place", especially one that caters to children/families.

What is in the democratic 'works' is that MY CHOICE to patronize a smoking allowed establishment/club/tavern-cafe will be taken away. How about letting the PRIVATE PROPERTY/BUSINESS OWNER choose their own type of patron demographics.

I personally would 'vote' with my feet and my wallet.
I could get specific with examples......but.......I don't want to add to the perception of offending you.

I believe that the vast majority of smokers are already abiding by "rules", many of those rules being "unwritten". But hey, we are in general pretty easy to get along with.

Let's not forget the most important aspect of this proposed ban. Most of the "public" places affected are privately owned. I certainly wouldn't want more goverment intrusion on my business.

I wonder if my worm farm is considered a public place. I do have customers that come by. Maybe if I smoked they should boycott my disgusting business. I also wonder how many children's lives will be saved by my little worm farm being smoke free.

what I said was,

meaning that I wasn't in the mood to say anything that may sound insulting.

As far as anyone's rights we can aruge this til the cows come home. lol I for one will leave this subject for now since it is seems you can't see any other side but your own on this matter.

I do however want to say thank you to Mark.

if all smokers realized that it's their choice to smoke or not, but it is always a good choice to be courteous and mindful to others...then maybe we would not be in this conversation at all.

take care,

sorry, I've found this topic a little late. but as usual i'll put my 2 cents worth in anyways.

you get 'em greenbean2.

yes, im a smoker. i might have even quit at some point if it werent for my
rebelion against the b.s. but i have my own reasons for agreeing that the price should go up and a state wide ban should be put in place.

the health reports come out and later the scientists will actually admit on record that they were payed to say those things and everyone still points to the reports and claims it's a health issue.. no its not...not as sever as the anti's claim it is. if you read the reports closely you'll quickly discover that they defy common sence.
admit it, you want to ban smoking simply because you want to. the same exact way people drink and smoke and gamble, because they want to. it might become an addiction later, but they start because they want to.

I agree with greenbean, and have gotten many antismokers angry with me for pointing out that. a camp fire is far, far, far worse for you than my cigarette is, but you sure do enjoy it.

several friends and myself have meat smokers,
i get a huge kick out of watching my militant anti smoking friends sit down at my house and consume large amounts of smoked fish when im pulling them straight from the smoker, they never once complain about the smell or the smoke, and they definitely don't complain about the fact that fish they are eating has at least 100 packs worth of smoke related chemicals in it. i enjoy watching them, enjoy the smoke and the smell and the nasty chemicals. im not even going to explain the smoked ham and ribs.

as for my reasons to agree with the ban, they are simple.
my grandfather made huge amounts of money running booze during prohibition when they banned alcohol.

im going to make huge amounts of money when they finally outlaw smoking. im going to be rich!! way to go Doyle, do me a favor increase the taxes about five more bucks would ya. i can find my way back and forth to the Carolinas no problem.

as far as camping and a campfire..I actually lived at a campground for 9 months one time and for several years most of the summers. Campfire? Cook outs? You better believe it. It was a way of survival. Did I like it? NO. I'm allergic to smoke so I always tried to stay down wind. I will say I liked to watch a fire though...it's relaxing.

Thanks for the comment about the smoked food. Makes me want to re think that lol But really it's never been my favorite even though I have done it before. Smoked a whole turkey one time at the campgrounds. But that was so many years ago before we really heard everything about smoke, second hand, first hand whatever.

All I can say for when you are making all that money though...remember your friends! lol

YIKES!!! Whole post seems very angry. Had no intention of making anyone mad. Just posting a follow up story I saw.

No pollster called me either, and for your information my world revolves around my children and the animals in my life, and the animals soon to be in my life. I am the last one I take care of. I'd rather give to my kids or the animals then to myself.

Proves my point that this is a hot button issue that's being played to the limit by the Politicians and the do-gooder crowd.
