Marriage should be all or none. If you think it's a religious thing, then it doesn't belong in the govt. at all, either way. When the govt is involved, it must either extend the same rights and responsibilities to everyone or to no one.
Oh, and we're not protected by federal law. There are state laws about job discrimination here in Wisconsin, but that's about it.
I have to agree with Hobo, protect you from WHAT exactly? If you're protecting your religion, then it needs to be out of the govt. Separation of Church and State was an ideal that our Deist and atheist founding fathers wanted to protect them and their children from this kind of religious dictation to people of other religions. If your church doesn't want to perform same sex marriages, legalizing them wouldn't require it to anymore than it would require you to even admit us as members.
Also, there are a number of places in the country, even here in Wisconsin, where you can essentially be sent to jail or fined for being gay. That's not how it reads literally, but what it boils down to is "Be in the closet and pretend to be straight or the police will get involved and send you and your consenting partner to jail for being who you are." A more explicit description of the laws I'm referring to would cross out of the "family friendly" line we try to keep the forums to, but yes, there really are laws like that in most communities and states in this country.
And how is anyone supposed to believe that "I don't think you deserve to be treated like a person because you were born different from me" is anything other than hateful?
Frankly, all govt. sactioned unions should be civil unions. Marriage doesn't belong in the govt. anyway. But as long as the govt IS involved, it must allow them to all people on equal footing. Anything less is unAmerican.
Hobo, watch that you don't cross into Christian bashing. We don't allow any kind of religious bashing on the boards. I won't remove your examples, but please try to tone it down.
