Arrow Deer vs the vehicle

Avoiding deer

The State Patrol Bureau of Transportation Safety offers these tips to avoid collisions with deer:

Drive cautiously and slow down in the early morning and evening hours -- the most active time for deer.

Pay attention to deer crossing signs.

Always wear your safety belt.

Brake firmly when you see a deer in or near your path.

If you see a deer by the side of the road, slow down and blow your horn with one long blast to frighten the deer away.

If you see a deer in your headlights, don't expect it to move away. Headlights can confuse a deer and cause the animal to freeze.

Do not swerve – it can confuse the deer as to where to run. It can also cause you to lose control and hit another car or a tree. The only exception is if you are riding a motorcycle. In this case, you should break firmly and swerve if necessary. If you must swerve, try to stay within your lane to avoid hitting other objects.

If you hit a deer, stay in your vehicle, and do not touch the animal if it is still alive. Get your vehicle off the roadway and call a law enforcement agency.

Re: Deer vs the vehicle

I hit a deer once. And a dog. First instinct is to swerve...that is a hard habit to break.
