Council Grounds State Park has 55 campsites with 19 being eletric is located on the shores of the mighty Wisconsin River near Merrill,WI.This campground has showers and dumpstaion/fresh water supply.
We recently spent a weekend camping in this park. The last time we camped here was in our tenting days and in fact was 4 years almost to the day when we last camped in this park.At the time we camped at site 25, this time at camp site 24.
While the park is somewhat small it has a very nice scenic drive/walk or bike ride. I would say the main focus is the Wisconsin River but I also very much enjoy the "Kruger Pines Scientific Area"with the stand of tall pines dedicated to a 34 year veteran of Wisconsin State Senate "Tiny" Krueger.
The picnic area has a very well built and relativly new shelter building. Along the river area the State built many docks for fishing with one being "Accessable".
While the State of Wisconsin enforces a new firewood rule this park does NOT sell firewood , you must seek firewood from a local vendor.
Typical of a Wisconsin parks the campsite are more private and secluded even though they are quite close.
This Park is in my mind the "Gateway to Wisconsin's North Country.
The road to council Grounds takes us up Hwy 51 through Wausau. Will they ever finish that road? or are we in Chicago with the never ending road construction!

Park sign and registration station with park history sign.
