Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest-Boulder Lake Unit

Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest
Boulder Lake Campground

We enjoyed camping here over labor day and plan to return next year. Check it out as it has some of the best campsites we have seen anywhere along with new shower/bathrooms. This park also has small and large group camp areas with their own shower/bathroom facility.
Boulder lake is a fishing and swimming lake. They have designated wake times for those who wish to ski or use personal watercrafts.
There are hiking trails and many places around the area that offer Wolf river rafting trips. Yes the Wolf river is within a few miles of this camground. Opportunities are many in this area for all types of activities.
I call this campground a MUST for any avid camper.

Getting There

Boulder Lake campground is located 19 miles south of Townsend, Wisconsin Follow Hwy T from

Townshed for about 17 miles to the intersection with county Hwy W. Turn right on W and travel about 1.5 miles to Forest Road 2116. Turn right (north) on Forest Road 2116 and follow to the campground.

The basic info -from the web site

http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/cnnf/rec/camping/nic_22.html

Small group sites are now located on the same road as the large group sites. Boulder Lake Campground has gone through an extensive renovation project during the past three years.
All of the campsites have been renovated. Three hot water shower and flush toilet buildings are located in the campground. All buildings have accessible shower / restroom facilities. New vault toilets and hand pumps still exist for those who prefer the rustic experience. All vault toilets are accessible. The swim and beach area at the campground have also been renovated. There is an accessible concrete ramp to the water and an accessible water fountain. An Amphitheater is located next to the beach for interpretative programs. The boat landing parking area has been expanded. There is also an RV dump station available for registered campers. Boulder Lake has 89 family campsites. Family sites can accommodate a max of 8 people per site. Sites 9-16 and 40-54 have electricity.

Each of these 23 sites has a vertical electric box. Each with 20, 30 and 50 amp service available. There are 6 sites available for small groups up to 16 people and 4 sites for large groups up to 30 people. Reservations can be made on campsites 40-54 (with electricity) and site 66, 68, 81-89 (non electric). All the group sites can be reserved.

i have camped at the Boulder Lake camp sites since i was a kid a love it there. i don't camp there that often anymore but still return to fish. if people are interested there are a lot of primative camping sites around the area that are not on the lake and are remote to get away from some of the people. they are located in the oconto barrier free camping area. this area also has a trail for walking (it is a wide nicely groomed trail) and docks for fishing along the Oconto River.

Boot & Boulder Lake Campgrounds

I remember camping there when I was maybe 8 yrs old. That's a little over 45 years ago. We camped there and we camped at Boot Lake, which is just outside of Townsend WI. If you went about a mile east on M, turned left on T, stayed on T (past 64) you would find Boot Lake. They are almost identical campsites, because they are both part of the Nicolet National Forest. Boot is a little smaller campsite, but the lake is larger and I think it has better fishing. I haven't been there since my kids we're young, but I may have to check it out.
Oh by the way, any Kayakers or anyone who wants the excitement of the Wolf River, there are a couple of places to rent group rafts along Hwy 55.
Check out http://www.co.langlade.wi.us/visitorsguide.htm for more info. Also they have the some of the best snowmobiling in WI (when we have snow)

I think we can have a general camping thread and threads about specific campgrounds. There should be enough to say about each.

Carry on, Carry on
