S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald and other Ships

Hard to believe that November 10 will soon be upon us. November 10 will mark hte 30th anniversary of the loss of the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald which sank and took the lives of twenty-nine men while travelling from Lake Superior to Detroit.

With the weather as nice as it has been, it is hard to believe that things could get so nasty off shore as to capsize a ship as large as some ships are.

There is a website dedicated to the Edmund Fitzgerald that you can visit:
http://www.ssefo.com/

I have a section on my website dedicated to preserving the histories of Marine and Shipping, a very large part of Wisconsin History.

http://linkstothepast.com/marine/index.html

Is anyone else out there interested in the shipwrecks or heard any stories about ship preservation or restoration?

1975 SHIPWRECK ON LAKE SUPERIOR IS BEING REMEMBERED TODAY

A 1975 SHIPWRECK ON LAKE SUPERIOR IS BEING REMEMBERED TODAY.
TWENTY-NINE MEN DIED WHEN THE EDMUND FITZGERALD WENT DOWN DURING AN INTENSE STORM.

GORDON LIGHTFOOT'S SONG ``THE WRECK OF THE EDMUND FITZGERALD''
TOPPED THE CHART AND MADE THE NOVEMBER TENTH SINKING FAMOUS.

THE ORE-CARRIER LEFT SUPERIOR, WISCONSIN, NOVEMBER NINTH, HEADED FOR DETROIT. IT SANK A DAY LATER ABOUT 15 MILES SHORT OF SHELTER IN WHITEFISH BAY.

TODAY'S EVENTS INCLUDE A CEREMONY AT THE GREAT LAKES SHIPWRECK
MUSEUM AT WHITEFISH POINT, MICHIGAN, AND A SERVICE AT THE MARINERS' CHURCH OF DETROIT.

IN MINNESOTA, A LIGHTING OF THE BEACON WILL BE HELD AT SPLIT
ROCK LIGHTHOUSE ON THE NORTH SHORE AND THE NAMES OF THE SHIP'S CREW WILL BE READ.

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
The lake it is said never gives up her dead
when the skies of November turn gloomy
With a load of iron ore 26,000 tons more
than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty
that good ship and true was a bone to be chewed
when the gales of November came early
-Gordon Lightfoot-
