Wisconsin Maritime Museum

Welcome Aboard!

Welcome to a great place to learn, play and explore the rich maritime history of Wisconsin and the Great Lakes region. Located on the shores of Lake Michigan, the Wisconsin Maritime Museum offers visitors a unique place to spend hours learning about the sailors, shipbuilders and submariners who made that history, and to have some great family fun!

Founded in 1970 as the Manitowoc Submarine Memorial Association, the Wisconsin Maritime Museum has grown into one of the largest maritime museums in the Midwest. In addition to commemorating the maritime heritage of the Manitowoc-Two Rivers area and the submarines built here during World War II, the Wisconsin Maritime Museum is now a leader in preserving the maritime history of Wisconsin and the Great Lakes region.

The Museum

With over 60,000 square feet of space, the Wisconsin Maritime Museum explores the rich maritime history of Wisconsin through exciting and interactive exhibits. A unique collection of model ships and boats, an operating steam engine, displays of historic vessels and marine engines, and the Wisconsin Waterways and Little Lakefarer's Rooms – special places for children of all ages to learn and play. Browse our web site to learn more about the Museum, then come visit us and discover how fun history can be!

The Submarine

Get an up-close look at life in the "silent service" by touring the World War II submarine USS COBIA. Tours are conducted seven days a week, weather permitting, throughout the year. Each tour lasts 45 minutes, with the last tour of the day scheduled for one hour before the Museum's closing.

Begin your visit to the USS COBIA in the COBIA Interpretive Center. Hi-tech exhibits and a multimedia theater will help you learn about the six war patrols of COBIA, the important role that US Navy submarines played in World War II, and how Manitowoc came to build 28 submarines during the war. Explore more exhibits and look through the periscope of a Manitowoc-built submarine in the USS RASHER Concourse before stepping onboard COBIA.

The USS COBIA Overnight Education Program offers a unique opportunity for groups and individuals to experience first-hand a taste of life aboard a World War II submarine. Details on making a reservation and planning your overnight stay are included in Frequently Asked Questions, an Acrobat.pdf document.

Before entering U.S. Navy basic training, I took the opportunity to tour the USS Cobia, which is a WW2 attack submarine, that is part of the museum. I was impressed with the knowledgeable tour guide.
Since then, the museum has been revamped/remodeled. From what I understand, it is a first rate facility, with exhibits and displays covering the trade shipping on the Great Lakes, and the part that Manitowoc played in the maritime industry, with shipbuilding included.
As it happened, I was qualified for Aviation Duty...aircraft carriers...fresh air sailor. The only time I spent below the main deck was to have chow.

A great trip

I took my kids, boy age 11 & girl age 8, to the Maritime Museum last summer and we all had a great time. The submarine tour was excellent and held the kids attention and interest. The museum offered a lot including the activities in the basement. Go on a warm day and watch the ferry leaving too. Also, the lakeshore between there and Two Rivers is awesome for walking and picking up rocks and shells. And don't forget going to Two Rivers, birthplace of the ice cream sundae, for the ice cream.

Re: Wisconsin Maritime Museum

The Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc is the largest nautical museum on the Great Lakes, showcasing 100 years of Great Lakes waterfront history.
