Nutrition.gov

Nutrition.gov provides easy access to the best food and nutrition information from across the federal government.
It serves as a gateway to reliable information on nutrition, healthy eating, physical activity, and food safety for consumers, educators and health professionals.

Providing science-based dietary guidance is critical to enhance the public's ability to make healthy choices in the effort to reduce obesity and other food related diseases. Since dietary needs change throughout the lifespan, specialized nutrition information is provided about infants, children, teens, adult women and men, and seniors.

Users can find practical information on healthy eating, dietary supplements, fitness and how to keep food safe. The site is kept fresh with the latest news and features links to interesting sites.

Technology Brings the Information You Seek

Nutrition.gov uses technology to enhance site navigation and search capabilities. We continually strive to improve both the content and usability of the site.

The Nutrition.gov Web site contains more than 1000 links to current and reliable nutrition information. Our homepage can be accessed by going to: http://www.nutrition.gov

Nutrition.gov arose from USDA’s commitment to promote a healthy America as outlined in Healthier US: The President’s Health and Fitness Initiative. Nutrition.gov is supported through a USDA Interagency Agreement with Research, Education and Economics (REE) and Office of Analysis, Nutrition and Evaluation (OANE).

Food and Nutrition Experts Working for You

Nutrition.gov was revitalized by the staff at the Food and Nutrition Information Center (FNIC) and the National Agricultural Library (NAL) in cooperation with a panel of food and nutrition expert advisors from agencies within United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). FNIC is an award-winning leader in on-line global nutrition information and was selected on this basis to revamp Nutrition.gov with a focus on obesity related issues. The current Nutrition.gov site was launched in November, 2004. Read the press release.

FNIC's staff of trained nutrition professionals, most of whom are Registered Dietitians (R.D.), provide information on food and human nutrition.

WOW... I'm not sure I belive everything the Gov. says?????
I mean really .... Don't peolpe know how to eat and exercise?????
WE have to have the gov. tell us what is good and what is bad????
These are ONLY MY OPIONIONS..... HERE!!!!! So don't get too mad at me!!!
People been eating for hundreds of years..... seems like they were doing ok.... But now all the goodies in a robot, machine like world... we just need less intake of the food or need to workout more.... like my grand father did... he dug ditches, and graves .... all by hand (shovel and pick) so you worked off the calories you ate then..... now we have big equipment to dig for us....
I could probaly write and bore everyone to death on this ... but I'll stop and say, " Moderation is the key"

Unfortunately

Some folks don't know how to eat properly. I saw a show not too long ago where a child was taken into the emergency room because of pain in his legs and here his parents were only feeding him oatmeal and nothing else. They said he wouldn't eat anything else so the poor kid was lacking all kinds of much needed vitamins and minerals.

Some folks over eat. I'm guilty of that one. If I'd eat the right things, it probably wouldn't be so bad, but I grab stuff I like...not always what's healthy.

It is ridiculous though that the government has any say at all about nutrition. That should be left to the doctors and health experts. But of course the government is consulting the best of those professionals, right?

The real reason the gov needs to be involved with nutrition is schools. They can link funding to requirements that the school provide healthy food instead of cheap junk. But in order to do that, they have to have an "official" version of what's healthy and what's not. It would be nice to think that everyone involved with a school was in it because they had the best interests of the kids at heart and would spend the extra on real food, but it's just not so.

I remember one place I went to school there was a big lawsuit between the state and the school because the state was requiring them to offer milk at lunch and not just that but NON-EXPIRED milk at lunch. See, the school was getting expired (read: spoiled -- trust me, it was spoiled. blech) milk cheaper than fresh so they were trying to get around the state requirement by offering the cheap spoiled milk. It cost less and they didn't have to pay the electricity to refrigerate it. When they lost that suit, they started making everyone, whether they were drinking it or not, whether they were buying the school lunch or not, pay extra for milk every day. If you didn't pay, you got detention.

Another reason the government is involved with this health topic has a lot to do with what I do for a living.
My wife and myself care for adults and many of these adults are unable to cook for them selves but can work and be a part of the community and live and in Adult Family Homes and CBRF's, and in Family Care Programs.
The government mandates what these individuals that are suppose to be receiving in Adult Family Homes and CBRF's, and in Family Care Programs.

This may be a local, county or state rule or law imposed on to business owners such as myself to maintain a fair healthy living environment for these adults.

NOTE:
"FNIC's staff of trained nutrition professionals, most of whom are Registered Dietitians (R.D.), provide information on food and human nutrition."

In regards to school food, most schools now offer healthy options in addition to junk food. My mom is a lunch lady. She says that few kids choose the healthy options when there is pizza or junk food available. It's not that the options aren't there, the kids simply don't want them.

Healthy eating has to carry over at home. If kids are eating trash at home, they'll go for trash when left to make their own choices. At my mom's school, parents can get a list of what their kids buy at lunch because they use a debit card system. If you see that Lil' Cody is only eating pizza and cookies, perhaps Cody should lose his lunch card in favor of bagged lunches.

I'm really irritated with the current wave of junk food bashing. You can eat junk food, you just have to eat in moderation. The chips aren't to blame when you sit down and eat the whole bag. Your lack of control is.

No argument here. However, if all the school is offering is potato chips and squirrel-meat pizza and spoiled milk because it's cheaper and that way the school board can vote to give themselves raises again, the school is to also to blame for the unhealthiness of its students. That's where the govt. stepping in and requiring schools to have healthy and safe food comes in.
