Grand Chute's Got a Bear of a Problem
Grand Chute's Got a Bear of a Problem

Bear Loose in Grand Chute
By Isabelle Kallie
People living in a Grand Chute neighborhood say they spotted an unfamiliar visitor: A black bear.
At least five officers surrounded a wooded lot in Prairie Hill Park near Northland Avenue after the reports Thursday morning. That's where the bear was last seen. Officers never found it, and never saw it come out, but they aren't sure if it's still in there.
Police say many neighbors started calling about the bear around 8 a.m. One caller after the next told them about a fully grown bear with a shiny black coat walking through the neighborhood.
"Right to our patio door to the back of the house, and there was the bear lopping across the back yard," Carl Kloehn said. The "bear was quite tall. I would say it's about two-and-a-half feet to its back, pretty good-sized bear."
One neighbor who's been living here for some time says he's seen deer, fox, raccoons, and even rare birds but never a large black bear. "I was just working on a snow blower in the garage and I looked up and I thought it was a black lab running across the yard," Don Fietzer said, "and I looked out the door and, no, it was a black bear that ran across my yard."
"Maybe 250, 300 pounds," he said.
It left fresh paw prints in some newly-spread dirt.
Police say the state Department of Natural Resources is aware of the bear sighting but the DNR says it won't come out unless the bear is up in a tree, cornered in someone's yard, or posing a threat. The DNR says bears are typically shy animals and will avoid people.
There have been other reported sightings of a bear but so far there have not been any other confirmed sightings.
"He was a beautiful looking animal, and he had a very shiny black coat, and it was actually quite pretty to look at," Kloehn said.

Wis. man says his dog saved him from bear, then died
Associated Press
http://www.twincities.com/mld/twinci...s/16787193.htm
CATARACT, Wis. — Jason Schindler says he wouldn't be alive if it were
not for his dog, Dude.
The 27-year-old rural Cataract man said the 8-year-old mixed-breed
hound jumped between him and an attacking black bear Thursday night,
saving his life but giving up his own.
The animal sustained at least 28 puncture wounds to his chest and
neck, he said.
"I'd hate for someone else's dog to go through what mine did," he said.
Schindler and his wife, Kimberly, buried the dog with a blanket and
pillow the next day, using a rented jackhammer to dig the grave in the
frozen soil.
He said he heard the dog yelping loudly Thursday after dark and went
out to see what was happening.
Suddenly, "all I saw was this dark thing lunging at me," Schindler said.

That is so horrible of you for stealing mommy and cub’s dinner; you should be ashamed of yourself. But I totaling think you should have left the carcass where it was when you realized it was now there lunch. I would have followed my meal too Redraven. What are the two biggest Nos when in Bear Country, 1. cubs and 2. Getting in the way of a hungry bear. YOU COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED! Next time just slowly back away and never turn away from a grown bear. Just think the venison you enjoyed for a few months was contaminated with bear slime.

Sorry about the loss but the hound dog Carol is truly a hero in my book and even through its passing he'll still be around to guard all new pet arrivals.
I have to wonder what provoked the attack in the first place. I've encountered many black bear at very close range (mere feet) and I was never attacked we just all minded our business and no one got hurt.

Re: Black Bear Reports - Wisconsin Only
The DNR estimates Wisconsin’s black bear stats this year is about 13,000. I have a humorous but could have turned ugly bear account from last month in Waupaca County. A family friend was bow hunting up in his portable tree stand some 15 feet above ground. Well a perfect white tail buck came into range and he was pulling back for the shot…. but something spooked his prize.
A momma and her three cubs strolled through the region. Our friend even though he was strapped to the tree and buckled to the stand for safety he began to hoot and holler making a annoying ruckus in an attempt to scare away the visitors. Plan didn’t work! One of the cubs in curiosity skied his tree. The youngster climbed to a few feet above him. Ohh ****! Momma bear went into a tyrant; before he knew it she was knawing on his boots while clawing at the camouflage pants. After one of his boots fell to the ground along with Mom bear the baby must have finely gotten bored and climbed down right over him. He did receive minor cuts but was thankfull to nothing major. His company well they wandered off to live another day, in the end he did get his deer.
Basic knowledge should be don’t ever provoke a mum of any animal species they will protect their babies. In most scenarios of black bears macho bluff usually works, but in this case what do you think he should have done? For me I believe he did the right thing, we can be experts in bear safety but in the end we can’t control what the bear will do.
