Why doesn\'t the DNR help?

We've recently have had a lot more problems with bears. Nothing too dangerouse but scary enough that I called to ask the DNR for help. I was told that they would do nothing.
Situation is: mama and 2 cubs walking around my yard....not dark out and I have 2 children old enough to play outside on their own....but still scares the heck out of me
A week ago: sister calls...she's got mama and 1 cub right behind her house....not maybe 50 feet from her back door...she needs to leave for work and can't....she calls DNR...they tell her the same thing and add that she could call this other guy to euthanize her and move her and baby
What the heck is going on?
You can't just shoot the bear yourself...you're in trouble.....you can't put them to sleep...you're in trouble and you can't call the DNR....cause you're sti;; in trouble!!!!

Man, I feel for you and all the other folks whom have a problem with disturbance bears. I love bears but also I have great respect them. I've seen many bears in my lifetime (black, Kodak Grizzly). On many occasions they were within reaching distance to me. With the continued population growth we are constantly expanding to encroach upon our wildlife habitats, which leads to a lot of problems.

Please don't shoot the bears yourself unless its bear hunting season, otherwise its legal matter. My biggest advice for you homeowners; if at all possible bear proof your residence, don't leave out any garbage outside, keep the feed for your animals/pets in a well enclosed compartment and don't intentionally plant any fruit or berry shrubbery near to your home. Dogs are big deterrents to scare away the nuisance bears. But sometimes no matter what you do the bear keeps coming back. A lot of times these bears very likely become more than just a nuisance but destructive to your property. I would call not just the DNR but also any origination, which has the qualifications to remove and relocate the bears. Ones that lose their fear or repeated offenders are humanely euthanize.

The Reason the DNR will not help is because of the very nature of their name.

I would find your dilema very disturbing, perhaps a letter writting campaign would be in order for concerned.

The wife and I just talked about this. AJE (Amber) had some good answers. Others, loud wind chimes. Remove all sources of food (garbage, bird food, etc.). Blast noise out a window when they're around.

If DNR won't help, or just expects you to pay someone to tranquilize and move them, try local police. The removed a crazy woodchuck from our property once. The thing was fearless and acting looney, and we had small kids around.

IF A BEAR IS CAUSING A NUISANCE IN YOUR AREA:

Contact the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture Wildlife
Services. In the northern half of Wisconsin, call 1-800-
228-1368, or in the southern half of Wisconsin call 1-
800-433-0688. They can help you by providing
additional information on reducing or eliminating your
specific problem. If the situation is severe and
presents a threat to health and human safety, they can
also remove the bear from the area.
