Raccoon Facts

Did you know that raccoons are one of the most recognizable animals on earth with their bushy alternate black brown ringed tail and bad guy black mask.

Raccoons are native to North America and South America. An average raccoon is about 32 inches long including the tail and weighs 11 to 18 pounds. In the northern part of their range, raccoons may weigh 33 pounds.

Raccoons are omnivores and their diet includes frogs, crayfish, fish ,birds, eggs, fruits, nuts, grains, small mammals and insects. Raccoons feed heavily in the fall months ,putting on the extra weight that enables them to survive the coming cold weather and scarcity of forage.

Raccoons do not hibernate in winter though they remain in their dens more, only coming out to forage for an hour or so each day.

Summer is a time of great activity for raccoons with the kits playing, getting into mischief and discovering their world.

pk will become famous soon enough
The top picture is soo cute! Did you take these pictures? If so, are these some of the coons you have been working with all summer?

Just wondering....Before you release the babies you work with, do you give shots for rabies etc. to give them a better protection for back into the wilds?

Also, if you do release them, do you release them all where you live? Won't that be alot of coons in the same area after a while?

just wondering...

Yes those are all my babies. I am up to 66 for the year. 66 came in yesterday. Little tyke yet.

Top pic is Luke! He was a wee one I was not sure if he was going to survive at first. All those coons pictured are mine/I also took their pics. I love photographing animals.

Rehabbers do not vaccinate against rabies in coons because there is no vaccination for them. We do vaccinate them for distemper and parvo and we worm them.

They are all released right on my property which butts up against 1500 acres of DNR land and swamp and streams. I can hear them in the woods at night playing. Soon though they will be out deep in the woods and I wont hear them any more.
