Squirrels on Birth Control

Not WI related, but didn't know where else to put this.

Park Puts Squirrels On Birth Control

POSTED: 8:02 am CST March 6, 2007

SANTA MONICA, Calif. -- The squirrels will be going on the pill at a Southern California park.
Actually, the birth control hormones will be given by injection to the rodents in Palisades Park in Santa Monica.
Officials said the squirrels are breeding like rabbits. Many in the community don't want the squirrel population controlled by killing the animals.
So, officials said the birth control shots shouldn't upset the animal lovers.
This summer, the shots will be given to both the male and female squirrels in the park.

pk will become famous soon enough
I thought this was interesting so I checked into it some more.

Apparently the city had an over abundance of squirrels for many years trying several other options before they decided on this program.

There are over 1,000 squirrels they plan on catching in cages this summer and giving this shot to. This will render the animal sterile for a number of years with a single dose. The vaccine, developed by the U.S. Department of Agiculture will cost between $2.00-10.00 per animal and have no side effects. I could not find why there is such a difference of cost ($2-$10.00) unless the males cost less than the females or the other way around?

This isn't the only city in California that has tried this. The city of Berkeley all ready has this plan in effect and it's doing quite well.

I also found that as far away as Scotland they have been doing this after becoming quite infested with the rodents.

Thanks for sharing this article with us Carol.

I would like to also add my tid bit from watching Animal Planet's Venom ER with Sean Bush MD of Emergency Medicine at Loma Linda Center. That the squirrels are immune to the rattlesnake venom thus they are also a nuisance to these snakes
http://www.llu.edu/llumc/emergency/venom-er/bush.html

Most animals go out of their way to avoid rattlesnakes, since their
venom is strong enough to kill even large creatures. But the
California ground squirrel (Otospermophilus beecheyi) has quite a
different strategy for dealing with the venomous predator.

If a rattlesnake is seen anywhere near a ground squirrel nest, the
squirrels immediately mount an offensive campaign. They rush in and
out, kicking sand at the snake, even biting it if they can. A snake
might be buried in dirt and pebbles, or even killed by these feisty
squirrels.

The adult squirrels are partly immune to rattlesnake venom. A
squirrel that is bitten by the snake during the fight usually suffers
no long-term damage and heals up quickly but it lives. Unfornatly the young squirrels are not quite so immune, so they tend to stay out of the way until their older.

 A Squirrels Story
So let's say you're a common ground squirrel. Just for a moment, pretend you're minding your own business, searching for seeds, doing whatever it is that squirrels like to do. Then, suddenly, out from behind a bush slithers a huge, sinister rattlesnake, coiled and ready to strike. What do you do?

Obviously, you run away, play dead, or perhaps negotiate a deal of some sort. In any case, given that you're a furry, gentle squirrel and the snake is a deadly, rattling killer, whatever you do, you don't stand your ground and fight. Right?

Wrong! Calling upon the instincts passed down from your ancient squirrel ancestors, you rush at the snake, kick sand in its face, try to bite its tail, and then turn your back on it and whip your tail around.

Now why on earth, you might be wondering, would my squirrel self take such suicidal measures? Kicking sand and biting might do some good, but tail waving? Why further taunt a venom-fanged snake already bent on violence?

As you may have guessed, there is a method to such madness. When confronted by a rattlesnake, squirrels' tails heat up, getting hotter by almost four degrees Fahrenheit. The infra-red sensors built into rattlesnakes' eye sockets sense this increase in temperature as a big, waving, fiery blotch. This alarming display, plus the fact that squirrels are partially immune to rattlesnake venom, actually gives the squirrel a distinct advantage when it confronts a rattlesnake. More often than not, the rattlesnake will slither away in search of a less intimidating foe.

Oh, and by the way, you're not a squirrel anymore.

PS I want the gift of this Immunity so I can find more rocks and not worring about being tagged by a snake!
