I'm new here
Hello All,
I'm BassPlayer81's wife. We currently live in my parent's basement, catching up on bills, in Longmont, CO. We hate it here, and are looking for a place to move where we can start a family. I refuse to raise a baby in this state. A friend of mine at work was telling me about how great WI is, and now my husband wants to move there. He found pictures on the internet, and it is beautiful. I'm just a little hesitant because I've never been there, and he was a tourist when he visited. I asked him to find people I could talk to about living there, and he found the Bubbler. I look forward to talking to everyone and can hopefully find the answers I'm looking for.

Re: I'm new here
Welcome! Your husband certainly picked a great website to talk to people about Wisconsin. This site has members all over the various towns in Wisconsin.
My suggestion if you can somehow take a vacation to the area that your husband wants to move to..before you move here, may help you to decide if you like it here. Of course that may not be an option so my other suggestions is doing what you are doing now and asking members what they think of this great state.
I think alot has to do with what you are looking for, rural, small town, larger city, great nightlife, quiet living, remote places, or great neighbors next door. It's all here, just depends on which way you go in Wisconsin.
I know in our city we have great schools. Many choices from your regular neighborhood schools to many charter schools, private schools, and many choices of education. The one we picked for our children at the time they started was the duo language program. Excellent option for our children at the time.
If you like shopping, we have it all in our area! But even though Kenosha is a larger city, it has a feeling of small town neighborhoods. Here you won't see cows, or farms unless you go out a little then suddenly you will feel the country air and see the many miles of fences etc.
If you like tourist attractions, you have a beautiful area around the Dells.
Skiing in Wisconsin is quite popular, also fishing is all over the state with the many lakes, ponds, rivers, etc. Camping is great family fun with so many choices all through the state too.
Food is the best anywhere you go to eat in this state. With Madison, and Milwaukee close by us we also have a ton of festivals, fairs, and everything else to go to. Festivals seem to be quite many in all areas of the state also.
If snow is what you love, then middle to upper Wisconsin is great. We get less than the upper part being we live in the far south part near the lake.
lol, I really started out just to say a big WELCOME. Didn't mean to go on and on but that is how many of us are when we get started on how great Wisconsin is! lol
Hope to see you in the forums.

Re: I'm new here
Funny, I've been wanting to move to Colorado for some time. Nothing wrong with Wisconsin; it just doesn't have my mom in it like Colorado does.
Anyway, if you don't mind Winter, Wisconsin is really a great place to live. I've lived both in the east (Sheboygan) and in the west (La Crosse). I much prefer the west side of the state. The scenery is better (not so flat) and the cost of living is lower (at least between the two cities).
The Dells is a great place to visit but I'm not sure I'd want to live near there. From what I've seen (as a visitor), it's pretty dead in the Winter and overrun with tourists in the Summer.

Re: I'm new here
Welcome. I live in the northcentral part of the state. A smaller city where I graduated from. We moved but came back and now been here again for 18 years. Not much in the way of crime, schools are awesome and lots of variety to see. I wouldn't move if someone paid me to move.
Again, welcome and hope things go well for you.

Re: I'm new here
Welcome Samantha!
You can check the Wisconsin Dept. of Workforce Development's job board to check out jobs in the Dells area. I think Juneau, Columbia and Portage are the counties that make up the Dells region. I'm not sure what type of jobs you're looking for, but I'm sure there's tons in retail and hospitality. While these aren't typically high-paying jobs, the cost of living in central Wisconsin is much less than Milwaukee or Madison. Life also seems much more peaceful in the Dells area than it is in the metros.
Wisconsin Job Search
If you are looking to move away from the crime in Colorado, I'll caution you on northern Milwaukee county. There's a lot of violence in the area. Unfortunately, I've heard Milwaukee referred to as "Killwaukee" more than once in the media. It's a shame because there's great places to live in Milwaukee county.
I live in northern Waukesha county, just one county over from Milwaukee's worst areas. Aside from car break ins, we live in a very peaceful town. It's amazing how just a few miles can make a difference. It is changing though... I wouldn't mind moving to a more rural location myself.

Re: I'm new here
First off, Welcome to theBubbler, Samantha. You'll find this to be a great Wisconsin Information Source, and simply a fun group of people. I live in the east central portion of the state...I like to call it "Between the Lakes". I have Lake Winnebago to the west, and Lake Michigan to the east.
Mostly a quiet place, and like MichelleC said, it's flat. Sure, there's a few hills to break up the horizon. Really green compared to alot of places I've seen around the country. I've lived in various communities around the state. Many places in the southern half of the state seemed too crowded for my liking. I like some elbow room, myself.
Winters are harshly cold for just a couple, maybe 3 weeks during the entire season. February is always icy. Seems the weather here changes as fast as you can turn around.
I like it here, and enjoy the options I have in Wisconsin. The Great Lakes provide beaches, and a variety of water sports,. The north woods are very quiet...you can actually see stars in the sky at night. There's plenty to see and do here, you just have theBubbler, and all the friendly folks here to guide you.
Enjoy, and Welcome again.
