There are certain ups and downs of having a private septic, and well system.

Ups include the lack of a bill from the municipality, fresh drinking and cooking water.

The down side include time and chemicals to maintain the septic system, having a large vent pipe standing in your yard at the end of your seepage bed.

Most times the water from wells need softening...so you have to have a water softening system. Often times, rural areas have alot of seepage from nearby farms in their water. This must be treated. Industrial parks are also a source of well contamination.

It is crucial that private septic systems, and potable water systems be maintained to help ensure good health of the user.

More communities should strive to have private systems. One of the best things that a private on site system can do is recharge the ground water at the point where the water was removed. There are many communities that are starting to have a shortage of water. We need to keep development of new subdivisions at a reasonable density to allow for private systems.
If you look at some of the sewer service areas and see where the water ends up after treatment there is no doubt in my mind that some generation down the road will not have an adequate water supply.
Our elected leaders need to look ahead, far ahead.
