Email-Free Fridays

I found this article very interesting. A group of engineers has started "Email-Free Fridays" at Intel. The goal isn't to slack off, it's to encourage telephone and face contact.

I can appreciate a personal touch in buisness, but without email I'd be in big trouble! I use email so I can have a written record of my contacts. I recap calls in emails all the time. I'm also lack short-term memory so I have to write things down.

What do you think?

Interesting but I'm with you in wanting things written down. I also don't delete email because I frequently go back looking in my email to find something I've forgotten.

I'm terrible about letting things pile up in my inbox, too.

That's really an interesting post.

I was on the road yesterday and took the opportunity provided by 4 hours of business day drive time to make some phone calls. Only got about a half dozen in, but they were great conversations - and I likely couldn't have communicated them so well in emails. I probably wouldn't have taken so much time for the conversations if I was at my desk - with all those old and new email messages demanding my attention - either.

How about a qualifier. Email free Fridays unless you're re-capping a real conversation?

I'll put pen to paper from time to time. Face on meetings...verbal conversations are good, in that they stimulate mental synopsis.
Email, for me, is a convenience, more than a necessity

I still don't think I could do it! I need MemoToMe.com to survive. It emails me to take my medication, run errands or do routine things. I forget everything when I am away from a computer!

Managers NEVER put anything in writting. I am not a manager but if I need to convey something that could be held agaist me I do a face-to-face or phone.
These days you just have to CYA.

eMail is the best way to maintain a record as they are timestamped.

Heh,
I prefer face to face and phone conversations, however in my line of work, email is critical. It's something I could never do.
