Windows problem

I have a problem with my computer. It will not let me access the Internet and does not recognize our new modem.
Our computer was acting sluggish and started telling me it could not access certain pages that the web page cannot be found etc.
Then it simply would not let me on the Internet. I called SBC service, they tested the lines etc. and said my modem was not working 100 percent. They did not think it was the modem though. So they offered to come out and check the outside lines but would not do that unless I made an appointment to come in the house and check the filters etc at a cost to me. I told them we could check out own filters I was not paying.
Anyways, we put new filters on and also took the modem that we actually just purchased little over a month ago back and exchanged it for a new one.
All set up, tried and our computer still would not connect. It tried to load the modem but would not do it.
So I suggested we get our other computer (not hooked to the Internet) and switch our towers and see what happens. Presto! This one works. Got right on. Since all my pics and information is on the first computer not to mention it is a much better and newer and more expensive computer I don't want to stay with this older (window me).
I asked around and the answer came back that it is not the computer but a windows problem.
Does anyone know what this is and what can be done? A friend of mine said he could fix it but won't be able to until maybe this weekend. If it is something simple maybe someone can give me an idea what to do? (in easy terms please). lol

pk my guess would be you have a corrupt network interface driver.
This is only my guess.
I would remove all network drivers and reboot allowing the opperating system to detect and re-install the needed drivers.
If that fails my next guess would be replace or get a new network card, install and let the windows auto detect again..

oh yea did you restart your modem and make sure it indicated a good connection? Have you tried a new network cable or ensure it had good contact?
try these simple to try items first.
Check cable restart
remove and reinstall drivers
remove old network card and replace.

I may have been co owner of a major local website that in it's time received over 2 million hits/month, I may type fast and mean on forums, I show I have a great love and appreciation for computers, BUT.....

I don't know a:

or how to:

without some help.

But I do think that the corrupt driver is what a friend of mine thought it was. I was just hoping it was something that all I had to do was a few adjustments with help but to remove, replace cards, not me...

But I thank you for letting me know and maybe I can research some of this and see what it's all about and then send the computer out this weekend for my friend to fix.

Oh, I can at least answer that we did restart the modem, check everything out, and also put all new, cable, modem, and filter on. It did not work until I changed the tower. So we knew then it was the computer and not any thing to do with the modem/cable etc. That would have been to easy if it had been. lol

It's always something with computers isn't it?

I would say that a new modem is the clue here. Computers have many different parts made by many different manufacturers. They all have to communicate to each other. Sometimes they don't. Sometimes new hardware installed will interfere with something else that's already installed. I would go into the device manager and look for conflicts. Your new modem is probably using a path that something else is already using. This may be a manual fix that you need help on. My advice is to try a different make and model of modem.

Hope this helps.

Mark

Understood PK. But I still feel (not saying I'm right) that it's a hardware conflict. Your new modem may be the same make as your original, but it may be a newer model or a model that was actually manufactured at a different site.

With the modem installed, go to control panel>system>hardware>device manager. This is where you should see if there's a hardware conflict. Depending on your version of windows, you look for exclamation marks or other indicators that there's a problem.

Take a look around in there and see if you can see any problems.

well...I was a happy, happy mayor last night with my wonderful computer working great. All was right with the world.

Then I went to bed and slept a peaceful night....

But morning came and it was BACK TO THE SAME PROBLEMS! uggg!

OK, I have tried all the tips here and still can't get the internet to work. What to do now?

I check the updates, the modem, the connectors,

I ran a check through help and it mentioned that I may not be connected to the phone line. My lines have all been checked and they work fine. Like I said the computer worked great just last night and I have done nothing different with my phone lines or phone connection. I left my computer on all night so it's not like it was turned off and got lost somewhere.

Is there a virus that could be doing this? I ran a full scan and everything seems great.

HELP!
