SHAWANO LAKE INFO
Jerry Olsen, fishing guide and former owner of the Bamboo Bar, 5868 Cedar Ave., Shawano (715) 524-4992, has fished big Shawano Lake for a lot of years. Accordingly, he’s become something of an expert on the lake – expert enough, that is, to have formed a definite opinion. “Shawano without doubt is one of the best self-sustaining fisheries in the state,” says Olsen. “It has every kind of bottom you can imagine, acres of weeds, and plenty of spawning habitat. It gets heavy fishing pressure, but it keeps shrugging it off, helping itself. So it keeps coming back, year after year, after year.” Walleyes are perhaps Shawano’s top draw, says Olsen. Light-color jigs tipped with minnows work best, and generally keep the motion slow. The sandflats around Schumacher’s Island and the submerged point to the island’s west are great spring locations to fish for goggle eyes, says Olsen. Later in the season, move to the two weedy sand humps about midway between the island and Shawano County Park on the lake’s north shore. They can be hard to find, but electronics have brought a revolution to fishing, so turn on your pinger and have at it. Once you’ve located them, fish at the 15- to 20-foot level for the goggle eyes and shallower for Northerns. During the summer, too, you’ll find productive cabbage beds and dropoffs on the lake’s east end. The two off the tip of Cecil Point are two of the better ones. And the area off the Duchess Creek outlet should be worked, too, for Largemouth and Crappies in the spring. And while you’re in this area, motor just a bit farther west and check out little Washington Lake, which is accessible by channel. It’s a Largemouth haven, and you’ll find plenty of the bigmouths around the docks on the lakelet’s east shore. Toss plastic worms or crankbaits tight to the docks. And, speaking of Largemouth, try tossing plastic worms into the weeds on the west shore of North Bay; your efforts can produce a bigmouth up to 6 or 7 pounds, and you might just tie into a Northern, as well. Or, if you prefer smaller bait, nightcrawler chunks should get some action in the same area for some of the 8-inch ‘gills you’ll find in Shawano. And, as long as we’re discussing ‘gills, there’s no better spot to try for them than around “Bluegill Hill,” a 10-foot hump toward the south side of the lake, just west of Jigs Resort. Slip bobbers and live bait work well here, and you can occasionally find Northerns, Crappies, and Walleyes in the same location during the summer. For Muskies, says Olsen, you’ll want to try the outlet channel off the lake’s west shore. Large Rapalas, Suicks, or bucktails with orange blade and brown tail seem to work best here. Winter sees good ice action for panfish, Walleyes, and Northerns. Olsen says you’ll see some 350 shacks on the ice during a good winter; bring yours and join them.
