Castile Soap
Author: MrKhay
Time:
15 minutes-8 weeks
Difficulty:
moderate-difficult
Serving Size:
1 lb. soap
Description
Castile soap is a name used in English-speaking countries for soap made exclusively from vegetable oil, as opposed to animal fat. Examples of oils used in castile soaps include olive, coconut, almond, hemp, and jojoba. Castile soap is also sometimes called Seafarer's soap because of its broad range of uses.
Ingredients
  • 16 oz olive oil
  • 2.2 oz. lye
  • 3/4 cup of water
  • fragrance is optional
  • 1 tsp. lavender oil
  • 1/4 tsp. Bergamont oil
  • 1/4 tsp. Jasmine oil
Preparation
  1. Heat oil to 150 degrees F. Mix water into lye. Cool lye to 150 degrees F. Slowly pour lye water into oil and stir constantly for 15 minutes, and on and off for 1 hour. Mixture may take as long as 2 days to trace (thicken). You need to stir it occasionally. When trace occurs add fragrant oils. Pour into form, cover to keep warm. Leave for 6 days. Then place in freezer for 12 hours. Remove from form. Place on racks and age for 8 weeks. This soap is also a very fine shampoo bar. Unscented it is a very fine baby soap.
Instructions
  1. A word of caution before you try to make this soap of this kind for the first time. Using this recipe, it is recommended that you read a good soap making book. Be cautious of lye, as it is a very caustic ingredient. Remember to be careful of hot oils. Have all ingredients ready before you start mixing. Be advised that soap making is to be done in order of instructions, and that distractions such as the telephone, doorbell are to be ignored. Maintain a good clearance between the soap making operation and small children. Remember, hot oil and hot soap can burn you or any children in the immediate area.
  2. Making soap is a enjoyable hobby, and can be very useful. Please be careful, and you will learn a useful craft that can be enjoyed by you, and your family.
