Polk County, created in 1853 from St Croix County, is named after James Knox Polk, the 11th President of the United States. Located in northwest Wisconsin, the county seat is Balsam Lake.

Natural Vegetation Northwest corner: jack pine and prairie grasses; willow, soft maple and ash along St Croix River. West: sugar maple, basswood, and elm. Central and east: maple, hemlock, and yellow birch. Southwest: white, black, and red oak. East-central: area of white and red pine.
