A few weeks ago I watched "National Treasure 2", it was interesting but still made me a bit drowsy but then this scene with Mt Rushmore caught my eye amd woke me up. In a flash they scene changed to view from a hellicopter flying over the monument and then over a lake.
I recognized the lake and after searching my archives, I found a photo taken while on vacation. It was an awesome sight and reminded me very much of Big Bear Lake in the mountains of California.
Sylvan lake is located inside Custer State Park, South Dakota. This park is so huge you could spend a week there and not see everything available. I hope to return to this park someday.

I remember going to that lake. You can get a great picture of the rocks reflecting in the water when it's calm. That's how it was the first time I was there. The second time it was windy with ripples on the water, not quite as nice.
The person who was in charge of carving the 4 Presidents had his studio and home in Stamford , Ct. The cartoon illustrator Mort Walker who created Beetle Bailey now has his home there.

That's a beautiful photo, the way it just sticks out of the rocks...
I remember driving on the needle highway as a kid, long before I knew how to work a camera and I remember just getting excited at how every turn you could see Mt. Rushmore in the windshield of the car... or surrounded by nature.
Beautiful pictures John. South Dakota has a special place in my heart. My Mom grew up in Watertown S.D. so we heard many stories about the area and her childhood.
We have taken several trips over the years to S.D. One time we actually stopped in Watertown, that was really great to see some of the different places I had heard about over the years.
I especially love the Badlands. There is no real words to describe their beauty and the eeriness of this place. Many years ago, we took a helicopter tour over the Badlands. Fantastic way to view the scenery.
Mt Rushmore area is another favorite. We spent many days in that area doing all the 'tourist' things as well as going off on our own and just driving everywhere.
A friend of mine actually grew up on the Indian Reservation in Hermosa and he also told me many stories about the area.
I have many pictures of S.D. but not from my digital camera so not sure how to show them. But John did a wonderful job of pictures he added.
