Photography of rocks!

I am looking for some information on how to get good quality pictures of rocks, How do I go about doing this..I mean for pictures in books. I am working on a project and I collect a certain type of rock...I want to do a book on these rocks....You will laugh and be also surprised at what I have collected in my rock collection.I usually go out hunting for meteorites ,but as I have hunted I have found other rocks that I just find so darn interesting...I will post a few later...I know you will be like floored!
I have other questions but will go with this for now!

Re: Photography of rocks!

First order of business.. get yourself some good lighting. Good lighting is key. I think for under $50 at Walmart (or eBay) you can get a good lighting setup that should work for you..

Here's an example:

Portable Photo Studio Lighting Light Box Tent Kit,PLT05 - eBay (item 220305426518 end time Nov-12-08 10:47:16 PST)

Second, get a decent tripod, the sturdier the better.

Re: Photography of rocks!

Yeah, a few weeks ago I went out in the middle of te Eau-plane river it's down and I found at least three face rocks one looks like it was carved. It looks pretty neat. I go all over to diifferent places and take photos of all sorts of things but rocks are my biggest project. I shwoed some of my rocks to a club meeting and they whre like..Oh man neet! I found just about every park has a rock that watches you! No kidding. I have only found one or two places on the net with rocks like these but you have to see what I found...I dig in the ground to find them also..
.................................................. .................................................. ............
Hey last month on the Eau-Plane River Park between Straford and Mosinee, I found what looks like a human arm or leg bone..I did not take a picture, but know where it is..If it has not floated away. It might be a animal Deer ..how-ever I was not sure because I thought it looked more like a human bone. The bone was clean and at first I thought it was a hunk of tree wood but as I got closer I noticed it was a bone about 9-11 inches long and one end looked chewed off... the nuckle part. Never know it might be an ancient indian's bone.Does deer have wider bones or do they look simular?anyway By the look of this bone it wasolive green colored probably very weathered and old.

Re: Photography of rocks!

IT will take me a little to get some pictures up....I have collected probably abot 50 rocks and took 50 photos other of rocks I could not take ..you know ones stuck in the ground part of a larger boulder or one on a bigger park type boudler...I found ones of Indain faces and some animals too...I also take faces on tree's and man I got some spooky/humorous looking tree faces also. You never know whose watching you!A dirt pile over at Hat Field, WI, I got one also...wierd! it's looking at the water fall by the train track!.
One night me and a friend was out taking some night pictures and above us... I said look at the tree it is staring at us....an old witch! she looks up and says (Oh wow!) that is freaky....It was the branches and leaves shaped in the moon light like a witches face...profile view!No kidding and when the wind blew it looked like it was moving like shaking it's head..Funny... but very freaky when was around 10:30 P.M. ...we were looking for (Orbs) and watching for meteors. It was dead silent and no houses except for a cabin.

If you think that is cool..I check maps and you wouldn't believe what I have found and I sent one to the historical museum and they recorded one of my sites I found, it is unknown to anyone else!Indian archeological spot I believe!HUGE!!!!!!
I am my own Indiana Jones.

If it's a human bone maybe contact the police?

Do you have a website with your pictures? There's websites that you can showcase your rocks for free too.

Re: Photography of rocks!

Wha Who...got the computer working better......Java script was not on.

Here is some pictures ...Sorry so big! ...I will fix the next ones I add on here.
Do you see the faces ( One face with dark eye's and a hat, kind of like a spy 007 type face!!!!)and see the horse head rock? Are they just neat..Found the one face rock on the "Big Eua-Plane Park" By Mosinee just 2 weeks ago ..The left big rock that looks like some ancient gladeator warrior and the other (right side) one facing toward him, looks like an indian face...the others I found along roads and in fresh dug ditches.
I have good stories for the book how I went about finding them and what people would say and how they would act when I was out there....

What do you think..This is just a samll part of what I have found and I am still looking.

Talking Re: Photography of rocks!

Of the two faces looking at each other in the one picture....
The rock on the left, I found about two hundred yards to the left of the boat docking area where the lake was, but the water is now gone! No water!
I took three other faces in another spot, with a camera because those rocks where part of an underground rock, which can not be moved. Another wards, the rock on the left was just laying on top of the ground.
The other rock looking to the right..I found while looking for rocks in a ditch right here where I live, about three miles down the road.
All the other rocks where found all over in different places...
If I do a book, I know a farmer who has a garden with has a huge boulder in the middle and the boulder has a awe-some face as if it is watching the farm. This farm is one of the largest farms in our area and was featured on the news a few weeks ago. That would make a cool conversational piece and a excellent book cover also. I found various other homes and places with boulders that have faces also...It is just uncanny how many you can find if you look. I would ask where they found the rocks and if they knew there was a face on the rock....
My book would be really interesting.
I just don't know how to go about it and who to talk to...
I even have stories from people who I have spoken with, who have interesting rock face stories that are out of this world!
One man was telling me he found a rock somewhere in another state on a hunting and fishing trip that looked like an alien head..but he left the rock there and now is kicking himself for leaving it and it looked as if it was a alive at one time. I would feature him in one of the articles in my book. The book would not have a lot of writing in it, because it would be more of the picture side of things. I have some cool stuff to dress up the rocks also! No kidding! Make the book fun for kids and adults alike!
I found some of my rocks along the Hatfield river in Hat field, WI..
I am addicted to the face rocks..you never know what you will find.

I even have a few rocks that look like TV stars. One rock face looks like Elvis! Really!

Call me weird...I prefer: The rock Lady!
Most people know me as the meteorite lady also, that why I say keep looking up!

I say: keep on rocking and keep looking up!

Re: Photography of rocks!

Love the rocks, Frank-e!

You need a light tent as dgridley said. You can buy one or make one--here are a couple sites with "how-to" instructions:

Strobist: How To: DIY $10 Macro Photo Studio

MAKE: Blog: DIY light box

I've used the plastic box draped with interfacing...works great (and it's quick to set up and take down). Have fun!

Re: Photography of rocks!

You think that is interesting..I have a cloud face that will floor you!
There was a storm passing through and I took some really good photos of it, but when I got my pictures back I was floored when I saw the evil face looking down at me! NO KIDDING.... DARK CLOUDS with a face that is either mad or evil...Just about blew me away...That face looked so real and it is by itself..Like a God thing or something.
I also have a couple of tree faces (Not holes in the tree either!) but what looks like real nose, eyes and mouth..of course when you come closer it looks like the tree..but man I just about dropped a load and just started laughing because it has this grin that is so freaking funny.
One day I was down over by the gravel pit in Niellsville and I was taking pictures along the road..I saw this face in the ground..and it can't be taken out because it's part of a boulder..I know you will see the face I see in it. Marshfield has a few good ones also, but I don't want to say where, because I don't want it to be recked by Vandals and it is in a excellent location. They are like a guards..I will just put it that way! I also have a picture of this cool tree which is now falling down...I call it My Harry Potter Tree because it is so cool with the arms look like they can grab you and it looks just like the Harry Potter Tree. I tested the thought and showed someone and they said yes it sure looks like a twin for the tree. I drove over a bridge near Niellsville and looked in the water and guess what? ..there were two boulders with faces and they are halarious....
I look everywhere when I am taking pictures for shapes of faces on land it's really interesting. I just started doing this this summer and I have probably 50-100 photos of rock faces tree faces and clouds with faces.I love digging for the rocks...Maybe it will lead me to gold someday ....probably not how-ever it is fun. If you do metal detecting like I do...don't pass up looking for faces... You will be amazed at whats out there.Next year I plan on asking farmers about there rock piles..I know I will be able to find some good rock with faces there!
Also I have lots of sky photos with odd stuff too...but that is another story and it goes in a different catagory..where not alone! he he!

Re: Photography of rocks!

I do the eye in the sky thing also!
Here is a satellite picture, I know you will find very interesting..
While researching a city not to far from Neillsville area, I noticed some faces and a kneeling person figure on the goggle map. This has been confirmed by a Museum in Milwaukee, How-ever they don't have any technology to go into the area, also it is not an archaeological spot as of yet. I won't give the location spot as it is of private property and if it does have any hidden treasures, I don't know the owners would not want thier property damaged.

I found the spot and hopefully would get the credit to it's finding if it ever did have any hidden treasures of the past!!! I should send this to the SUN Magazine...I am like the person who found the Indian carvings in that mountain.

Just call me Indiana Jones #2

Re: Photography of rocks!

Description of the map figure!
There is a face and shoulders right behind the kneeling Indian's back. A face also faces the figure and doing close observation another face is seen inside the figure. On a topo map, the hair of the face is clearly seen as part of the face behind the figure. It is not known if this spot had once possibly been inhabited by Indians or others of ancient times. There is a bluff with a river between the two faces, so each face is looking toward the bluff and including that of the Indian kneeling figure!
