Canon vs. Nikon

So, I have been working with Canon for years...my first camera was a Canon, and I've used it for years...
At work we are using a Nikon and it's an acceptable camera...
Recently Canon released the Canon XSi...DSLR chock full of features including:
CMOS chip
Camera Stablizer in the body
Self Cleaning Sensor Unit
Dust Delete Data Detection
And many more...but the one that is looking the best to me is the Live Vew function...
Live View is basically the ability to see what you are taking a picture of, in the LCD screen before you take it...similar to most point and shoots. And from what I understand this is new to the world of SLRs. This kind of thing would be beneficial for me, because I do stop motion animation. And I'll be able to get a live view into the computer...(kinda like a web cam) and get the most perfect shot...

I'd love to know if anyone out there has done any research or had a chance to play with the XSi...and furthermore. Do most people like the Canon cameras, or the Nikon Cameras...

Re: Canon vs. Nikon

I use both the CANON EOS DIGITAL and the NIKON DIGITAL D50. I love both of them for different reasons. I have tried to pick which one I enjoy using the most and I can't make up my mind they are both great cameras.

For the Canon we have also have a 300 mm lens and a duo stereo lens so we can use that one for different reasons.

The Nikon is a little lighter and also has a feature that stops the action in any setting. The Canon has a great stop action if you use the setting for that.

All in all either camera is great. I guess if you can get one on sale over the other than that would be the deciding factor.

Re: Canon vs. Nikon

We are working with the Nikon at work, and although it is a good camera... it makes me wish I was using my Canon. And even though I haven't bought the XSi yet... that's the camera I'm going to get... And, on top of that... it's really cheap at Best Buy right now, under 1000 for the XSi is unbelievable.

Re: Canon vs. Nikon

I had a canon....dont remember too much about it except it always gave me a hard time. Buttons would stick. I'd take a pic and seemed to take forever before I could take another one. It sucked the life out of my batteries.
Complain complain complain......

Then it just stopped working.

Next Camera was/is a Samsung Digimax A 503. Takes good pics, but the zoom is not all that great. It has lived thru many drops and a dog chew...
and keeps taking the pics.

Back to the Canon. So my kid takes it apart because it's not even working. He must have pulled out a small poodle! There was so much dog hair that had collected inside the camera from all the dog pics I take. Gets the hair out along with dust etc...and guess what. It still dont work.

You just discovered two of Newtons rules of physical photography.

rule 1
a working camera tends to remain working

rule 2
a non-working camera tends to remain non-working

Re: Canon vs. Nikon

Okay, I'm almost afraid to type this, because I know how attached people are to their brand...my pick is Nikon. This after thoroughly testing both. I took wedding photos all summer, every weekend with only 2 exceptions. I used a Nikon D90 and a Cannon 5D. The Nikon was a decent amateur-level camera and the Canon was a professional model. You couldn't tell the difference in the pictures; the only way you'd know which camera took them was by looking at the file names or the metadata. I ended up being completely annoyed by the Canon--you had to know the secret combination of buttons to press for ANY setting you wanted to change. Grrrrrr. You could FIND the settings on the Nikon without looking at the manual. In my opinion, the Nikon is vastly easier and more instinctive to use; much more thought went into the design. They both take GREAT photos, and of course, because the Canon was a professional model, there were more options. If only I could have found them when I needed them. I know that if I had spent even more time with the Canon, I would have overcome it's idiosyncracies, but why should I have to do that? I looked at, but did not test, a comparable professional Nikon, and found it as instinctive to use as the D90--it just had more options and better electronics. I say this knowing 4 professional photographers who use Canons and swear by them. I really did try to love the Canon, but it was too irritating for me. Just my humble opinion...like I said, you can get great photos (or bad photos, for that matter) out of either brand.

Re: Canon vs. Nikon

I'd tend to choose Nikon over Canon. Nikon has usually been the leader in optical quality and I think lenses are one of the most important factors for good photography. I just hate that most have switched to plastic.

Sacrilege! Haha, I like the Canon EOS series but I'd still love a Nikon D40.
