Laura Ingalls Wilder- Pepin's Famous Author

I'd like to open a thread here to discuss Laura Ingalls Wilder, perhaps Wisconsin's most famous author. I'd love to talk to other Laura fans!

I've been a Laura addict all my life, going beyond the "Little House" series to extensively research her real life. I've not gotten to any of the real "Little House" sites yet, but it seems that Pepin county, her birthplace, would be the place to start! Has anyone been to the replica of her little house in Pepin that has some tales to tell?

Picking a favorite book is nearly impossible, but I think "Little Town on the Prairie" wins that honor for me. I loved reading about Laura's teenage years, and how people in her day socialized and interacted with each other. I appreciate the care and detail Laura puts into her writing, you feel like you're there with her! When she describes making Mary's dress for college, you can nearly see it!

Share your "Little House" memories here, or post a question about Laura's life! I'd be happy to share my knowledge and passion for one of my favorite authors.

Little House In the Big Woods

As a collecter Waukesha County Wisconsin History, I have come to find out that the Early Years takes place in Brookfield, Waukesha County, WI. At that time, Waukesha County was still part of Milwaukee County

Caroline Lake Quiner (Ma) was born to Henry and Charlotte Quiner on December 12, 1839. When she was just seven years old, her father died, and it is during this period where the new Little House series The Early Years takes place with the first book Little House in Brookfield. Three years after Henry died, Caroline's mother remarried to Frederick Holbrook.

Caroline Married Charles Phillip Ingalls (Pa) on February 1, 1860, in Concord, Wisconsin.

The family moved to De Smet, S.D. in 1879 where Ma resided there until her death.

Five children were born to this union. Mary Ingalls of De Smet; Laura Wilder of Mansfield, Mo; Caroline Swanzey of Keystone, S.D.; Frederick Ingalls, who died in infancy, and Grace Dow of De Smet.

Ma died at five o'clock p.m. Easter Sunday, April 20, 1924, at the age of 84.

Kris10, if you are ever in the Brookfield area you might want to look up where she lived.

Laura Days...

Every 3ed full weekend in September, the little town of Pepin has what they call Laura Days, they do all sorts of activities in the park. It is right on the highway, if you go through town on that weekend you cant miss it. They have activities, sale tables, and all sorts of things to do with Laura. If you have never been there is lots to see and do and learn. Go check it out. They also have a laura museum in town on the highway and they will tell you how to get to her actual house area. Which isnt that far out of town. I know this cause i grew up there. I didnt get this from a book or a site.
