When high school teacher Caelum Quirk and wife, Maureen, a school nurse, move to Colorado, they get jobs at Columbine High School.
In 1999 two vengeful students go on a murderous rampage that Maureen miraculously survived, but she is unable to recover from the trauma.
They attempt to find a safe haven at his family farm but the effects are not easily put right.
While Maureen fights to regain her sanity, Caelum discovers old diaries, letters and clippings that span generations of Quirk ancestors.
