Skunks are cool. I have 2 of them as pets. They are domestic, decented at birth. Can't spray and dont carry that musk smell like a ferret does.
(I have ferrets to)

Do skunks as a pet act more like a cat or a ferret?
Just curious..

They play like a puppy or a kitten. They make sounds like a bird chirping, a cat purring, a pig screaming. They are very soft and snuggly. They are decented at birth. They do not carry a musky smell like ferrets do after decenting. They sometimes hop like a bunny when playing.

They are part of the family. They even have their own room. Skunks are litter trained. They are very friendly and snuggly.

They are really very, very cute. But not every animal you get is a tame pet. Do you ever worry about them biting you? Once you get an animal are you the one that trains them to become a pet?
Just wondering.

UGH....I have been bit, kicked spit on, busted toes, torn tendon. Most can be prevented as you read their signals...but the injuries I have recieved there was either little reaction time, or just no signal.
My latest just happened last week.
No signal at all. This is a bite from a dog.

Re: My pet skunk.
I have wanted a skunk for a pet for a long time. Now my daughter (17) is just as interested as I am. We have been doing a lot of research and we are now ready to find one for spring of 2009. We have the liscense application and were waiting to find someone that will have them available. We have been unable to find a breeder in the area. Do you have any suggestions?

Re: My pet skunk.
There are no skunk breeders in Wisconsin. The closest breeder is Randy Ruby over in New Sharon Iowa.
You have to get your Class B in order to have a skunk. You also have to follow pen requirments and you have to apply for an import permit in order to legally bring the skunk across state lines
Animal wholesaler in New Sharon, Iowa - Home Randy will have babies the end of June 2009 and thru July 2009...sometimes in Aug, but you have to call to see
If you are all set to get one and willing to make that drive then you will want to contact Randy and reserve one.

Re: My pet skunk.
I should also add, make sure all your paperwork is in order. Make sure you have all your permits, health certificates etc. Make sure to have a vet BEFORE you get your skunk. Finding a vet in WI to care for your skunk will be next to impossible.
You will need to get him spayed or neutered or it will turn into one horrible little deamon. Not just naughty, but mean. They must be neutered or spayed, or they do not make good pets.
Good luck. Let me know if you have any other questions

Re: My pet skunk.
I love both skunks and ferrets..
People don't realize that most skunks will do whatever they can to avoid spraying you.. they'll bluff by stamping their feet and would rather run away.
I let a skunk out of a muskrat trap when I was a kid. It had nearly chewed it's leg completely off to get loose. Never tried to spray, just hobbled off after I let it loose.

Re: My pet skunk.
That's right. They will only spray if they absolutly have too. It takes them 24 hours to build up that defense again...so they'd rather not spray unless there is no other option.

Re: My pet skunk.
Did you know that the human nose can detect skunk spray thiols at about 10 parts per billion.

Re: My pet skunk.
Skunk spray contains chemical compounds called thioacetates, which decompose very slowly into (guess what?) thiols.
So not only are you hit with an initial blast of thiols, but you get a slow release of thiols from the thioacetates for a long time to come.
That's why the smell of skunk tends to linger for so long.
But the skunks in my video's are all domestic skunks. Decented at birth..... so they can not spray ~ ever.

Re: My pet skunk.
Driving down the main road this morning to take my daughter to school we were hit with the strong smell of a skunk. Phew, almost brought tears to my eyes. So on the way back I took a different way which took me about 3 blocks east and I was surprise to find that I could still smell the skunk stink. How far does this smell reach out? Just wondering.

I remember when I was quite young my father bringing home a skunk that was de-scented. He kept it in a cage in the barn for awhile but I really don't remember much about it. I do remember that he still had a little 'smell' to him.

If they are decented shortly after birth they do not have a scent....like a ferret will still have a odor .... a skunk that is properly descented will not smell any more. There is a trick to the descenting process that I'm sure they didn't know many years ago, like now.
