Because we can detect skunk spray thiols at about 10 parts per billion..... it can travel quite some distance with us able to smell it.
How far? I'm not sure on exact distance....
The major compound of the striped skunk ~ skunk spray is
(E)-2-butene-1-thiol.
Second compound is (E)- 2-butenyl thioacetate.
At high concentrations the secretion causes nausea and retching and will act like tear gas if the liquid gets in the eyes.
At lower concentrations it has a very foul odor.
Skunk Spray is a yellow oil composed of thiols and thioacetate derivatives of these thiols. This secretion is stored in two walnut sized glands with openings in the anus. When alarmed or attacked, a skunk can direct this spray several feet.
Striped Skunk Spray smells different then spotted skunk spray or hog-nosed skunk spray.

Spotted? Skunks are suppose to be black with a white stripe. Spotted? OK, I'll have to look at your pics closer next time. Oh while I'm thinking about it...hog nosed?
OK, call me city girl, but hog nosed and spotted is new to me. All I know is when I see black with white strip or maybe a rare mostly white one I take off the other way. lol

We were driving out in the country one year and had a momma skunk escort her babies across the road in front of us.. I really thought the car coming in the opposite lane wasn't going to slow down but he did.
Driving to work a few years ago (when I used to work for someone) there was a skunk in the opposite lane eating some road kill.
I turned around and shooed the skunk off the road so it too would not become road kill....turned back around to head to work and there it was back on the road eating.
So I shooed it off the road for the second time and then tossed it my donuts I had just picked up at the gas station. It stayed in the field and ate those instead. I was then comfortable enough to drive away....and very happy coming home to see NO dead skunk on the road.
Spotted Skunks are beautiful. I have never seen one before not even pictures. Well there you have it folks, just another thing I learned from reading the bubbler forums!

love the pic of your Angel -- oh look at her holding her little feet with her hands, she is an angel! so pretty. we have only had black and white and a brown and white.
What did you have to go through to be allowed to have pet skunks? I'm of the understanding that they are illegal to have as pets in Wisconsin, or at least restricted to certain regulations etc.
I'd LOVE to have a pet skunk of my own! I've worked with them at my occupation before and fell in love with them, they are so cute and funny and smart and cuddly!
Please let me know what one has to do to be allowed to have one (or more)
thanks
Happy skunking
Basically the laws in Wisconsin requires any person that wants to possess, propagate, purchase or sell skunks to hold a Class A or Class B captive wild animal farm license, a nonprofit educational exhibitors license or a nonresident temporary exhibitors license. There are some exceptions for Zoo's and circuses. In addition, a skunk possessed by a nonresident under the legal authority of another state, province, or country may be possessed in this state by the nonresident for not more than 60 days from the date the wild animal enters the state if all of the following apply:
(a) The nonresident ensures that a veterinarian files a copy of a valid certificate of veterinary inspection for the wild animal with the department of agriculture, trade and consumer protection.
(b) The nonresident holds every license or other approval that is required by the other state, province, or country.
Skunks may not be descented by or for any person in Wisconsin unless that person holds a Class A or B captive wild animal farm license.
When skunks are held under the authority of an appropriate Wisconsin license, they are required to be kept in cages or enclosures that meet the pen and humane care and treatment requirements found in Wisconsin's Administrative Code section NR 16.10.
I can't figure out how to send you a Private Message, so I'll just have to post in here.
I am very VERY interested in having a skunk as a pet.
So, I understand you need a Class B license and a permit to bring one across state borders?
I'm guessing this is the first step in obtaining one of these cute little critters. How do I go about doing this? What state agency do I contact? Also, how much does one cost?
Could you just outline all of these steps? I'd like to be ready for spring when they are born so that I can go out to Iowa and not miss out on one!
Carol and I keep in touch by email so I will let her know your interest in skunks. If you want to send me your personal email by private message here I can also forward that to her.

You will have to do quarterly and annual reports as well.
The deadline for getting your Class B is Feb 15. It's going to cost you $45.00 for the first year and then each year after that you need to have your paperwork in by Dec 31 with a check for $25.00
If you apply AFTER Feb 15th it will be $50.00
APPLY NOW. BEFORE YOU HAVE A BABY.
Baby's are only available in late June, July and Aug.
Are you getting your kit from Ruby's?
Do you have a vet? Most vets will not treat skunks. Make sure you have a vet because you are going to have to get your skunk spayed or neutered by Sept/Oct before they season. An unaltered skunk is a danger and no fun.
Most of all Keep a Paper Trail of everything you do pertaining to your skunk.
I'd like to be ready for spring when they are born so that I can go out to Iowa and not miss out on one!
Thank you so much!

AHHHH I just re read this...Iowa...so you are going to Ruby's. You can also call Randy Ruby ahead of time and request him to "HOLD" a baby. 2 years ago there were not enough kits to go around. He will take a deposit from you. Usually he sells kits for $100.00.
I am aware of a skunk in WI needing a new home due to the economy...
Deb and Skunk Haven rely on us reps from legal (an illegal) states to supply the proper information for her website. If a rep does not give her an update, she will have false info on her site. Always best to straight to the source ~ The DNR......
Skunk Haven is a great source of info and you will find many of my pics & info there as well. But Deb and Kevin can't update as often as needed so some info is old/outdated info.
Thanks for the application information! So I just need to fill out the "Captive Wild Animal Farm" app and the "Wild Fur Farm" app? I will also contact Shirley.
Also, will I need a permit to transport the baby? I want to go to Iowa and pick up the skunk instead of having it shipped to Wisconsin (I don't feel that shipping is very nice!).
I was wondering who you use as a vet? I suppose I don't really care how far away it is, since getting proper care is extremely important.
Another question... Do skunks get along well with other animals?
We have a pug in the house, but he is very friendly. In fact, Ozzy (our pug) just jumped into a stranger's car across the street this morning when they had their door open. He's a lover. I will be around most of the time to make sure I can hold and cuddle the baby so that the dog doesn't accidentally knock it over or anything.

Yup, you have to do the above. Fill out those forms and contact Shirley.
Also be sure to read the pen specifications. The app will ask you to draw your pen size etc....

From my house to Ruby's is a 6 1/2 hr drive. You can't ship skunks into WI.
But if you drive and pick it up you can get a kit.
