Water for Elephants: A Novel
In his 90's and living out his days in a retirement home, Jacob Jankowski recalls his life in the circus during the Depression era. When a family tragedy forces Jacob to reconsider his dream of becoming a veteranarian, he runs away on a whim and joins the failing Benzini Brothers circus. Jacob is able to put his animal care skills to use as the circus vet, and meets an odd mix of folks on the circus train. The beautiful, talented Marlena catches his eye, and he befriends her and her elephant, Rosie. Marlena's abusive husband/animal trainer, August, and the cruel circus manager often butt heads with Jacob. As Marlena and Jacob's love grows and the circus falls deeper into trouble, Jacob, Marlena and Rosie must take drastic action to save themselves. The ending is a heartwarming surprise that makes you belive anything is possible, no matter what your age.
