I stumbled on to this website on the aurora borealis a few years ago and have always been meaning to sign up, just haven't gotten around to it. If you sign up they will email you alerts when the conditions are good for seeing northern lights in your area.

I remember seeing the northern lights for the first time in 2003 about. I had come home somewhere between 1-2 a.m. and happened to looked to the north. I noticed green waves moving across the sky. The waves moved almost across the entire sky. I sat outside for an hour just watching. It was one of the most amazing sights I've ever seen. I didn't want to stop watching and go to bed that night.

Since then I keep a close eye on the northern sky and hope to see them again. I've seen them a few times since, but not quite as intense. A few times the northern lights looked like rays of green lights flickering in the north. I've never seen the blue or red in the northern lights that can be seen at times.

The closer you are to the north pole, the more intense the colors are, or so I'm told. A few years back the lights were visible as far south as New Orleans. Solar minimums and solar maximums play a large part in the colors and intensity. I think we are now coming out of a solar maximum.
