Do you get American Pickers in your area? It's on the History Channel.
The show follows the on the road exploits of two antique dealers as they go in search of great deals .. personally, with the cost of gas and lodging, I don't know how they show a profit. These guys will pay $150 to make $100!
Last night show that we watched was pretty interesting. This show unlike the Pawn Store one has much better acting, faster pace to it, and I think has more interesting historic facts, AND the guys usually know a ton of info on the things they are picking.
On the other hand I can't believe an old oil can can be worth 100.00 and they will pay 50.00 bucks for it or a broken down rusted piece of a motorcycle from years back can fetch the kind of cash they say they can sell it for. Also hard to believe so many people think the way they live in the woods with 15-20 broken down old buildings chock full of junk piled from ground to ceiling is worth money. Cracks me up when so old guy doesn't want to sell something they find in the pile of junk that he most likely hasn't seen since he drugged it home years before because he can't 'part' with it? Yeah. If I had acres of junk I would think I should have to pay someone to get it out of my yard. lol
Another thing, some of these places they visit usually has older people that look like they never got off their mountain, or out of their yards...where do they get all their money to buy all their junk and where do they find all these things??? lol
But besides all of this, I do like watching this show.
My neighbor buys and buys old stuff and tucks it away and never looks at it again.. she's purchased alot from me over the last few years and most of it is in a box or cupboard or closet..
I'm the same as you.. I can't see having acres of junk and not wanting to part with it.. like you said, some of that stuff has probably never seen the light of day in years.
As for the oil cans and such.. they can be worth alot.. I just can't see them paying $50 to make $50.. how are they paying for their gas, lodging, time, etc?
I always try to make at least 500% profit unless I know I can sell something within HOURS.. the key is to buy what you know and like and buy with a buyer already in mind. A good customer list is priceless.. if you know who's buying what, you can sell anything.
Kudos to them for making it to the big time but going by their finds on the show and their profit margin, if not for the show, I don't think they'd survive long (IMHO)
Love the show anyway..

I watch American Pickers anytime I notice it's going to be on, unless it's a rerun.
Talking about people having loads of junk, I mean Treasures, there's a place close by me that has just about everything. Too bad it's all outside.
I took some pictures of all the treasures one time I was out Treasure Hunting, check them out below.
I like watching American Pickers too. My FIL used to "hoard" the kind of stuff you see on the show and he had sheds full plus his back yard had lots of old equipment and vehicles. He wouldn't part with any of it because he said "It will be worth something some day and that will be my retirement income." But, he died before he retired and his family had to get rid of all the stuff. The only money they got for most of it was for scrap price which luckily at that time was up quite a bit.
Unfortunately, that's how it ends for most "hoarders".. doesn't do anyone any good rusting in a shed or yard IMO. You need to sell while you and the buyer can still enjoy it.
Saving items doesn't always work because things are collected in trends and people buy what they remember growing up with. Wait too long and the interest in certain items wanes.

We watched that episode the other night. I was waiting for my husband to say something about the pinball machine we used to have that was from the early '70s. I loaned it to the Community Theater when they did West Side Story and didn't want to haul it back home so I gave it away.
Yeah, in my opinion most of the prices on that show are way off base.. that pinball machine was a decent buy at $90 but it had scaly rust on the metal trim.. no way that was worth $800, $400 was more like it.
Why she bought those windows or paid as much as she did for that dress form was beyond me.. she also should have bought the clothes as a lot for a lower price per piece.. she overpaid by at least 100%.
The drawers she bought? Again, why? She should have at least bought them with the stuff still in them.
The printer's blocks were the best items she bought.. paid a decent price and will make a good profit on them.
Repeat of Monday's episode tonight in case you missed it:

While in California visiting "Easyriders" magazine founder Mil Blair and other collectors around the state, Mike and Frank attempt to purchase rare, unique and vintage motorbikes, surfboards and albums at bargain prices.
Good episode with the boys in California.. tho I'm beginning to doubt the authenticity of the show.. methinks the producers are setting up some of those "picks".. certainly they can't be making money traveling hundreds of miles, buying at the prices they do, and only making a couple hundred dollars profit on a pick (not taking gas, food, lodging, etc) into account.
