Even though this is the 5th Star contest, I've only been watching since the last round of contestants. I started watching when they were down to the final 5 and guessed the correct winner (Melissa). Who will it be this time? We are down to the final 6 (of 12).
So far the ones that I thought were weak in their presentations have been eliminated. Those eliminated so far are: Paul, Alexis, Brianna, Doreen, Darrell/DAS, and Dzintra. Last night Brianna went home. She was a good cook, but her personality wasn't right for a show host. She could come off as kind of snobby and had a chip on her shoulder. She clashed with Serena in the beginning, but overcame that last week. I knew that wouldn't set well with the judges.
From the beginning I've had my eye on Aria. She knows how to sell herself. She is never negative and accepts criticism well. She seems like a natural in front of the camera. She does need to kick it up a notch however. She's been losing her wow the last couple of weeks. Aria is from WI originally. Maybe that's why I like her.
Another one I like is Tom. He seems like the unlikely chef. His look is very laid back and kind of sloppy. Kind of reminds me of a typical American guy that many could relate to. He's unemployed, so I hope something good comes his way. He didn't impress me at first, but he's coming around and I love his comedy. I think that would work nice into a cooking show as being entertaining.
Brad is coming around too, after a weak start. Aarti is a good cook, but I think her weakness will be her narrower focus on just Indian cooking. Herb started off strong and I had high hopes for him, but he has been up and down. As long as he stays on the positive, he'll do well. Serena, I think she'll be heading out next. I don't care for her personality and her heavy accent may not appeal to many viewers.
This week (7/25) seemed to be a tough one for everyone. Lots of mistakes, dishes not turning out great and lots of stumbles on presentations. In the end Serena was let go. If you see my post above, I was right.
Aria still hasn't gone back to her original strong start. I had such high hopes for her.
The first challenge was making something in 20 minutes using a breakfast cereal as an ingredient. Aarti won this challenge.
The second challenge was to cook as a team for 40 dinner guests. The dishes were to be prepared for what you find at a supper club. Presentations didn't go very well and most of the dishes were lacking. Aarti won this challenge.
Week 8 and we're narrowing down to the final winner. This was a tough week emotionally. I could tell the judges were having a hard time deciding who should go. In the end it was Brad who got let go. It was the only week Brad didn't wear his lucky hat either. For only being 25 he sure is on his way of making something of himself. Very talented chef and certainly good personality.
The first challenge was for the contestants to make a dish that represented them, but the catch was to include an ingredient they hated. The judges got to choose the ingredient. Aria won the challenge with Tom in second place.
In the second challenge contestants were given an emotion to make a dish and describe that emotion. 2 contestants completely forgot to mention their emotion in their presentation. The judges had to ask what their emotion was. Then there was Tom, he gave the most fantastic presentation I have seen this season. Great story on the tale of two tunas. His emotion was jealousy and the cool mild tuna vs the hot spicy tuna dishes he made showed great use of the emotion jealousy. Tom hit it out of the ball park with this one and won the challenge.
The judges favorite, Aarti and her Ahty Potty (or Aarti Party) didn't do very well in either challenge. I thought she might be the one to go this week.
Aria did great in the first and had a weak presentation in the second with her undercooked potatoes. Aria, what happened to you, girl? Seems like she lost her mojo after the the 3rd or 4th episode.
My prediction was Herb would go this week. That was before I watched it. Herb did well with his dish in the second round.
The final 4 are Aarti, Aria, Herb and Tom. I predict Aria will go next.
Ok, I'm a little behind on this show, but I did predict Aria would go next and I was right. I didn't see the Iron Chef battle, but I did see previews. I'll have to catch up on Sunday before the next round with Rachel Ray and the final 3 doing they're show pilots.
The last 4 contestants eliminated were brought back as each of the final four's sous chefs. Herb and Aarti were given shrimp as their food to cook with. Tom and Aria were given bacon. The Iron Chefs were the guest judges for the week. This is all I know so far and something about Tom's dish being the worst in Food Network Star history. I do know what Aria missed on all levels with food and presentation.
I'm making no predictions for the next round. I see strengths and weaknesses in all three. Too hard to see who the star will be. I would love to see Tom win because of his humor I would watch and they often seem to like his food. I wouldn't watch the other 2 because their cooking styles don't interest me.
I watched the last 2 shows back to back. Aria sure bombed on everything for the Iron Chef battle. She didn't seem to care after a while.
The NFNS winner was no surprise because Aarti was the judges' favorite. Of the 3 TV show pilots I felt that Tom's was the best and Aarti's was the most blah one. Herb's was pretty good too. Aarti just didn't keep me interested. I felt that the audience liked Tom's the best because it made them smile and laugh the most. Tom could have been the next Guy Fieri. He was always the biggest risk taker when it came to food. I would have watched his show to see what Tom would say next. The Ahti Potty show isn't one I will watch.
I just saw on Tom's facebook page he announced he did get a new show this fall on FN. He will be the host of Outrageous Food starting in Nov. Oh yes, we have Tom and I think this show will suit him more than a regular cooking show. I can't wait to see what this show is all about. The next Guy Fieri indeed.
I wonder if Brad will get anything down the road. Many fans were disappointed that he got voted off. He's only 25 and I think he has bright future ahead.

Have you been watching Jyll? She's from Wisconsin! She's been doing really well. Dare I say she might win? I've been posting a recap of each episode on my blog so check it out
If you google Edible Antics my blog will come up. Apparently I'm not cool enough to post links yet

I tried to check out your blog... apparently my job has everything with "fun" in the address blocked... will check it out from home tonight if I get a chance to get online.
Jyll lives in & owns a company in California... but I read on her facebook page that she likes to wear her cheesehead while catering.. I bet that goes over well with those who dislike the packers lol

I said that last season with Aria, then after about 3 or 4 shows she just keep sliding downhill.
I think Aria grew up in WI, but wasn't currently living here.
I have yet to watch the cooking show of last year's winner.
