Rare Corpse Flower to Bloom at Milwaukee Museum Soon
The rare, the huge, and the stinky corpse flower is set to bloom very soon at the Milwaukee Public Museum. It is expected to bloom Jan. 17 and it remains open for about 24 hours, maybe a little longer. Watch the museum's website for details on viewing (and smelling) hours. Smelly "Nelly" would like you to come see her if you can.
Re: Rare Corpse Flower to Bloom at Milwaukee Museum Soon
I had the pleasure of seeing a corpse flower twice. The first time it was through a window at UW-Madison and it was starting to fall over. The second time we got there at peak bloom time and got really nice photos close up. It wasn't as smelly as I thought. Kind of smelled like rotten cabbage, but really didn't seem overwhelming to me. A skunk smells worse. Then again, it was July and the windows were open. I'm guessing this new flower will be stinkier due to being in a closed building.
Neilson aka Nelly is the offshoot of one of UW-Madison's flowers, Big Bucky and Mr. Magnificent of Florida. Big Bucky was the one we saw close up in 2005. In 2004 we saw Little Stinker which was a little guy compared to Bucky. It really is amazing to see.

They seem to make the news more and more with bloomings around the country. It always attracts a lot of people. I'm not sure how many have bloomed in Wis. but I know Madison and Milwaukee have had about 3 or 4 times each. I don't think we had to pay to see the one at UW-Madison. That was in the college's greenhouse.

If they attract that many people, it doesn't surprise me that a museum or botanical gardens would want one. They can make a lot of money off the admission charges.
I think I first heard about corpse flowers back in the '90s and those were ones in England or on the east or west coast. Never thought I'd get a chance to see one until I heard about the one in Madison back in 2004 and we went there on a Saturday only to find out the college didn't have the greenhouse open that day. We did see it through the window. I was so disappointed. Then they had another plant bloom in 2005. I saw an article in our paper about it and then watched the website daily for news on the exact time of blooming. They had a live camera on it, so you could watch it from the website. One day it was starting to open so as soon as my husband got home from work we drove to see it and hit it at peak blooming time.
