How the Constellations Came to be
Patterns in the Sky: How the Constellations Came to be
Sunday, October 14, 2007
2 pm
Lecture by Michael Bakich, Senior Editor of Astronomy Magazine. Held in conjunction with the exhibition Celestial Images.
Today, 88 constellations cover our sky. No gaps or overlaps exist. But why this number? Why not 50, or 100? And why those particular figures?
The story of mapping the starry heavens began with the first humans. It’s a rich voyage of mythology, exploration, and a little bit of politics.
