I can tell you this, most of those business cards in your link would be expensive to print that's why lots of people don't do that. Die cuts, special papers or materials, or embossing can really add to a price.
It's true that a well designed card is memorable, but I'm sure I pay more attention to that than others do. Remember this, a business card is like the handshake you leave behind. You will be more likely to hand a card that you are proud of the design, rather than a boring looking card. I know I have fun handing out my cards or the ones I designed for my husband. His turned out really well.
By the way, if you have scans of any of your designs, feel free to post them.
People will often pay big money for leads and then skimp on their business cards.. I think paying the money for a memorable card design is worth it.

He makes some valid points tho.. $4 a card is worth it if they keep it and he gives them to those most likely to benefit him.
Then again, 25 years to design that card? Hm, likely story.. unless he's basing it on 25 years of having his previous cards tossed out with all the other look-alikes.
But when does a card stop being a card and become something else.. can we consider non-traditional cards "business cards"? Or are they promotional items?

I'm sure that's it. Maybe after years of trying the traditional card, he finally decided to go another direction.
Another reason that a lot of business cards look so blah is because most print shops don't give the designer a whole lot of time to throw something together. It's just get the info on the card fast without much time planning. Then there's the cost to consider. Designs that bleed off the edge cost more because you have to print less per sheet of paper and more time is spent on cutting. 1 or 2-color print costs less than 4-color.
