Mail carriers in Wausau will be collecting nonperishable food items placed near mail boxes along their delivery routes May 9 as part of a national initiative to combat hunger.
The National Association of Letter Carriers National Food Drive is the largest one-day food drive nationwide, and is held annually on the second Saturday in May.
In 2008, mail carriers collected a record 73.1 million pounds of food in more than 10,000 cities and towns from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
More than 1,400 local postal branches of the 300,000-member postal union will collect the donations and deliver them to food banks, pantries and shelters.
For more information, residents should call their local post office or speak to their mail carrier.
