Job Seekers beware of ID theft like what happened in Brookfield

She was interviewed and got the "job" and even filled out all the paperwork before she started work. She reported to work and found the "office" locked and dark. Read what happened to this Brookfield woman and how she was a victim of ID theft. Police are investigating.

Offer of new job may have been ID theft scam - BrookfieldNOW

Re: Job Seekers beware of ID theft like what happened in Brookfield

I wanted to post this to make people aware of ID theft in the job hunting world. I never put my SSN on a job application. They don't need that until I'm hired. In the above article the woman was hired, but hadn't started the new job. I hadn't thought of this happening. Please don't give your SSN until the first day of work and please do a background check on your new employer.

I'm not sure if this the best category to put this item under, but feel free to move this topic if necessary, Dave.

Re: Job Seekers beware of ID theft like what happened in Brookfield

For whatever reason the article refuses to open for me right now. I was interested in reading it since recently my youngest daughter applied for a job but so far has not started. She gave all her information, was told her hours etc. and so far (3 months later) has not started.

This was a new Mexican Restaurant opening up here in Kenosha. Family owned. The guy was waiting for his brother to come up from Mexico to help him and they were opening in a week he said. She was given a time to work (over 50 hours a week), and she told him she was still in school, something she mentioned several times... he told her that his wife would work out the hours with her when she started next week. They kept saying she was perfect for the job since she was totally bilingual. She had been looking for a good part time job for 17 months and was so excited to get this one finally. She was suppose to start as a hostess/waitress.

She was concerned that they never mentioned training and she told them she was not experienced as a waitress and the guy just laughed and said that he hoped she was a fast learner. Then said the following week when she was suppose to start that they would show her.

The day came and she rushed home from school only to find out they weren't ready for her yet. The city had something they wanted done first so they were delaying opening, (he said). Day after day she would get ready only to find out they wanted her to still wait. I finally called and could not get anyone but the man called back and left a message that they were so very slow with business and he did not need my daughter yet but would be calling soon. We never heard from them again.

In the mean time we have gone past the place many times, the place looks empty of business most of the time we go past even though they have signs up they are open and now even have flags.

Someone told me that her social security number could be the reason why they wanted her to think she was hired and perhaps one of their friends that came up from Mexico could be using it? And that I should call the S.S. office to see if there has been any activity on her number in the last few months...

I also want to mention that when being interviewed the new 'boss' kept asking personal questions such as, are you sure you have never been to Mexico and my daughter would say she has never been. Then he would pick a place in Mexico and again would ask her if she had been at that place in Mexico and she would again tell him she had never been. He again would ask about another place. ... then he asked her where she hopes to go on her honeymoon! She said...NOT MEXICO! And he wanted to know why..and she said, it's to hot, I like Canada. I just found it odd that he would keep bringing up about Mexico and personal questions. She was there to work in a restaurant here in Kenosha, not Mexico.

Anyways, has anyone else ever had a problem with handing over all your personal information including SS number after being 'hired' and then not actually be called into work? Should I investigate this further with the SS office?

I would check this out right away. Don't wait any longer. It's very possible that someone is using her SSN. Once someone gets a hold of your number it can create quite a mess with your credit. I've heard some real horror stories with stolen ID.

At the last few jobs I worked at they asked me to bring in my social security card when I started. They never asked before I started.
