Lafayette County, created in 1846 from Iowa County, is named after Marie Joseph Paul Yver Rock Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette, a French nobleman and general in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. Located in southwest Wisconsin, the county seat is Darlington.
