Calling All Crane Counters!
Help the International Crane Foundation (ICF) with research about crane populations! On April 21, 2007 from 5:30am-7:30am, the ICF in Baraboo, Wisconsin is sponsoring the 31st Annual Midwestern Crane Count in Juneau County. The count is used to monitor the general populations trend of sandhill cranes in the Upper Midwest, as well as to promote awareness of cranes and wetland conservation throughout the Count area. You are invited to participate!
The Count touches our state as well as parts of Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, and Iowa. If you are interested in helping in Juneau County, please contact your Juneau County Coordinator, Tina Tucker at (608) 565-3976 or
mikeandtinat@yahoo.com. For other counties coordinators please visit
www.savingcranes.org.
Potential volunteers are encouraged to attend a brief pre-count meeting (meeting times and site will be determined closer to count date and counters will be notified). At the meeting, participants will select survey sites and receive a data sheet and instructions. There will also be an instructional video which will review crane appearance, calls and field observation instruction (meeting is optional).
Please contact me, the Juneau Co. Coordinator as soon as possible to get on the list. I will send you all needed materials prior to the count. The Count couldn’t continue without the support of volunteers like you!
The count helps:
-Gain needed research the ICF uses to study Sandhill Cranes
-Obtain information about Crane habitats and their conditions
-Educate the public about the importance of Crane populations and preserving needed habitat
-You have fun, learn about our neighbors, the Sandhill Cranes, and experience the outdoors in all its beauty!
