Staying Cool
With the temps soaring lately, thought it would be good to put out a reminder about what we can do to help keep our equine partners cool and safe
1. Provide shade and PLENTY of COOL, not ice cold water, can cause stomach cramps. Keep water troughs in the shade if at all possible
2. Horses with pink noses and light colored ears, use a sunblock to help prevent burning. Provide light colored horses with a fly sheet that blocks UV rays.
3. Read an article recently about putting the powdered Gatorade in the water, they like the taste, encourages them to drink more, and the electrolytes help prevent dehydration.
4. Don't exercise your horse if it is too hot, wait until evening when it cools off.
5. Know the signs of heat stroke and stress and how to start treatment until a vet arrives.
6. Give your horse a bath, even if it is just a hosing off, will cool thier core temperature down. So what if he is just gonna go out and roll in the dirt,, mud is natures sunblock, and it's just dirt, gives you an excuse for another bath tomorrow when the mercury starts to climb!
Any other tips and suggestion?
Keep cool!!!!!!!!!!!
