Riding Trails

Ok, probably gonna make all the snowmobile users out there cringe, but how about using those trails during spring/summer/fall for horseback riding? I would even be willing to pay a fee to use the trails. That fee could be used to "clean up" in the fall. Those of us who are responsible would remove any thing our horses would "deposit" along the way. Hey, us dog owners have to scoop. All owners who paid that fee be required to either have a tag on thier bridle/halter, or carry a card with them to show they paid. Probably be more hassle than anything though.
Was just a thought, I see all those nice wide trails just sitting there all summer long.

BTW, anyone know of any good trails in the Mt Horeb area?

Hi,
I have wondered about this myself. One of the problems would be some of the farm fields that are planted in the spring, but we could ride around! I would love to ride some of the snowmobile trails on horseback!

This sounds great.

As a park user, I'd love to see riders. It would simply add to the ambiance.

As a "farmer" myself, I would have no objection to horseback riders if the "rules" were followed.
Look in a plat book and telephone the farmer to ASK PERMISSION and set ground rules: gates found closed are properly closed after passing through, always keeping to the edges of cropped fields, etc. The local snowmobile club ALWAYS contacts us before the start of the winter season for any 'updates' from us; they also call again after the first heavy snowfall to find out if our stock is out of the pasture their trail goes through and if the electric fence is off so they can open the gates.

Remember folks, it may be a "snowmobile trail" but quite often it crosses someone else's PRIVATE PROPERTY. 8O 8)

I agree. Every farmer I've known who has had a trail of one kind or another going through their property has been very cooperative. As long as the rules are followed and the respect is shown.

Please be considerate when driving/riding on someone else's property.

Thanks for your comments all! All my relatives are farmers and half of them are also horse crazy..... good to hear what some of the other landowners think. I agree - respect is the core issue with the use of trails.

P.S. One of our regular deer hunting "guests" knocks on our door once a year with a gift certificate for us to a local eatery to show his appreciation for being able to hunt on our land. :wink:

Needless to say we are always glad to see him, and to know that he is out there somewhere hunting our "hoofed rats".
